Experienced RN help finding work

U.S.A. Arizona

I have been an RN for over 20 years here in the valley. I recently left a job due to ethical conflicts with office mgr. Now, I am pounding pavement without much success. I have vast experience in the in pt & out pt setting. I have found several opportunities (which I am very quilified for) in the hospitals. I submit applications but I am not getting even a call back for interview. Anyone else experiencing this? Is the nursing shortage turing a corner? Where are the jobs at? :icon_roll

Interesting! When I sent out my resumee in May 2007, I signed a contract two weeks later. That was as a CNA with no experience. There seem to be RN positions available *everywhere*, they might just be having a problem with their HR departments.

It took Banner about three days to "review" my resumee, another 2 to call me for an interview. However, today, 20 days later, I went over and signed my contract as a monitor tech.

It might indeed be the timing though. A lot of hospital hired on a lot of new grad from December. All these are currently "using up" the other precepting nurses. So there is no real room for more training/orientation. I bet everything would go a lot faster in March when all those new grads are off orientation! Maybe in April some of them will have dropped out, too. I understand that's not exactly a comforting thought for those RN's really wanting a career change!

Just my 2 cents... I'm sure you'll get the right job, though! Good luck!

At JCL Deer Valley they have taken on a lot of new grads recently, especially those who were nurse interns/externs.

What about the new hospital at Thompson Peak there have been lots and lots of jobs there. Look under Scottsdale health care.

Thanks for the info & ideas. I did have interview at JCL (north) no word back from them yet. I really hadn't considered Scottsdale healthcare...mainly because their facilities are all so far from my home. I do have some interesting interviews lined up for next week with Maricopa County & with Barrows. Both for positions a bit outside the box & more what I have been hoping for. So, I guess things are starting to look up with a few nibbles on the line.

Interesting thread.

I applied online to Barrows and Banner a little over a week ago, with over 10 years experience and ICU certifications I thought for sure my phone wouldn't stop ringing! Mayo's the only place that called the next day and seriously considering it just to get my foot on Phoenix desert sand!:paw:

I started to get some nibbles from JCL north and St. Joseph's. I have TWELVE outstanding applications in for jobs at Banner - both Thunderbird and Good Sam. I haven't heard a thing from Banner.

HR at my facility takes average of 2 weeks to cull through incoming applications and forward to me after I make repeated calls---and another week or 2 to contact someone im interested in.

Positions posted online have to offer inhouse staff x7 days before can consider outside applicant.

Keep on pounding er clicking keyboard, make phone calls with persistant polite voice..... email to dept manager helps too to get the process pushed forward.

That's what I figured, I may try to get some names of managers out there and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the advice!

I'm also wondering if the increasing # of new grads isn't helping either. 300+ nursing students graduated this past December....Even more will be graduating in May. I'm wondering if there will be enough jobs to go around in a couple of years as more and more Nursing Programs expand.....:twocents:

That's what I see coming. Not only what you mentioned above, but my hospital has part-time nurses going to full-time and some inactive RNs returning to the workforce. The "nursing shortage" was created by many RNs leaving the profession or going to part-time status, not because there weren't enough graduates. Those aforementioned RNs who are coming back to the profession (as a result of better working conditions) and hordes of new grads are going to make it a tight job market. I feel bad for someone who's just starting school; they may have a difficult time finding the job that they want.

I recently spoke with a nurse mgr @ St. Joe's & someone form HR @ Banner Health. Both told me that they have intentionally slowed down setting up interviews the past few weeks because the hospitals were busy ramping up for super bowl. I hadn't even thought about the impact the super bowl would have on the hospitals...but it does all make sense. Additionally the person @ Banner said their HR depart is short staffed...which is impacting their turn around time with apps.

Never thought about that either. I'll see what Mayo has to offer and hopefully hear something from Banner and St. Joe's next week.

YeeHaw!!! Let us know how things go. I got an offer from CHW but I am holding out for a few more days. I have interviews with Banner & County still coming up. So, hopefully by this time next week we will both have good news to report! Fingers Crossed
