Experienced nurse to start on bottom of band 5??

Published

Applied for a band 5 job, and got a the job! When I asked what scale they would be starting my wage on, they replied that probably on a bottom five and then my CV would be remitted to payroll whom would readjust it accordingly.

Is this the normal procedure or are they taking advantage of the lack of jobs to buy nurses on the cheap! I have almost 6 years experience, 4 in the NHS and 2 in the private sector.

I really want this job cs it is close to home, but feel demoralized at having to start all over! Any comments would be very appreciated.

I would ask (I've never worked for the NHS but overhere we can "port" our hours).

Talk to the HR person who is in charge of hiring, point out your hours of experience and go from there.

To me it sounds like, they are using your payscale 5 as a reference point and letting payroll figure out where you belong. Ask for the actual wage you will be earning before you accept the position and sign the employment offer.

I had this problem about 6 years ago when moving back to the NHS from the private sector and agenda for change was new. I was going to a band 7 and bottom would be conciderably less than my current wage at that time, I was told at interview that they would match it, but on commencing the job HR said I had to start at the bottom. I had a battle of about 6 months but eventually I was awarded the increment matching my previous wage.

More recently I know of two nurses both moving back to the NHS and have been awarded the top increment at their band and they were taking a pay cut to do that.

You previous NHS experience will also count toward your annual leave entitlement as you get extra days after 5 & 10 years service.

Should be taken into account but may be back dated once they have confirmed previous stuff. That is what happened to me when I changed jobs and hospital several years ago

It depends, if your 2 years out of the NHS is your most recent experience it may not count, your manager can file for reconable service to get you onto a higher increment but it really will depend on where you have worked before if it's the same speciality and if your 2 years out can be considered to contribute to your new post.

if you have a 12 month break from working for the NHS the rules allow HR to put you back to the bottom increment of the band , managers and matrons can sometimes get this changed to the appropriate increment ...

Thank you so much for your replies... it comforting to know that others have gone thru the same. I will hold the manager to her word and present all my previous experience and gently push for my experience to be recognized. ;) I feel very blessed to have gotten this job literally 15' away from home, and at such a hard time for nurses.

nubes make sure she knows your aware that you may be entitled to reconable service, I've done it for my staff but she will have to justify it to HR and finance.

Good luck
