Excelsior Grads - Where are they now?

Nursing Students Excelsior

EC grads,

Post your year of graduation and your specialty/specialties. I'll go first:

I've been a Level II/III Neonatal ICU nurse since graduation in January '06.

Update 5/2018: I've worked for a large NICU since 2009 in bedside and education roles, and I've been a clinical instructor. I finished EC's MS program in nursing education a couple of years ago. I was recently accepted to the Ph.D. program at a state university.

Thanks Lunah!!

Graduated EC in 2008. I was a Paramedic in New York with no nursing experience. I am now a nursing supervisor at a LTC facility with 112 beds. I oversee 5 LPNs and 16 CNA's. I did EC's program for about $12,000 total (I flunked the first CPNE.) It was a great program for self-motivated people who want a flexible and cheap program. I am well respected where I work. Several of my nurses are doing EC just because they know I am a product of the program. That bodes well for both me and EC. The program is not easy, but doable. I could not get into a hospital because when I was grilled about the clinical aspect of EC, the nurse managers did not like what they heard and could not grasp the program. I know from my experience now that I would have made a good nurse in the hospital if they would have oriented me and given me a chance. Their loss, truly. Good luck to those of you working on, or thinking about starting, the EC program. PS- You can do it without an outside company's materials. If you are in the program now, Good luck and I feel your pain (we all do...)

That is correct -- you will not be licensed in the states that do not accept EC grads. Doing an RN-BSN somewhere else will not matter -- the state BONs will always consider the initial source of your licensure for ability to endorse your license into that state, and for EC grads, EC will always be the source of the RN.

This is only if you don't get required work hours in another state correct?

Ex: If I graduated from EC and worked full time for one year in NC then moved to CA with atleast 1800 hours (just an example to surpass CA reqs for endorsement), should I have an issue with getting an RN license in CA?

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

No there is no acceptable work equivalent for CA like there is for VA and a few other states. The only way to be a licensed RN in CA is to take a traditional RN program with concurrent classroom theory and clinical practicum.

Well that sucks.

Can't edit my last post on app.

So basically the only two states with no way in for excelsior grads is CA and IL, unless you work for the VA or federal system, correct?

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.

And Maryland is a no-go right now as well.

TYVM Nurse and Lunah!

Specializes in Home Health, Podiatry, Neurology, Case Mgmt.

Can't remember if I ever posted here or not, but here goes:

LPN from 2006-2012

Received ASN from EC April 2012- Have been working as a Nurse Case Manager since, did work on a Med-Surg unit for 6 wks, but HATE the hospital setting and love Case Management!

Enrolled right back into EC for the BSN program May 2012 with Expected finish of Dec 2013 (conferral will be Feb 2014)

Plan on going into an MSN program for NP starting summer or Fall of 2014 =) EC enabled me to be a SOLID independent student, I am successful in my online classes and hold a 3.54 right now with one term left to go. I feel well educated as an RN, and the BSN coursework is giving me confidence to continue to pursue my MSN =)

I am a newly graduated LVN here in California. We are a military family and I will be moving to Tennessee soon. I am glad I found this forum because I want to enroll in the Excelsior program. I am a little worried though about finding a school that will except Excelsior credits because I do plan on getting my bachelors degree eventually. Has anyone had any issues with moving on in their education and also has anyone had a hard time Finding employment because you graduated from Excelsior? My school for LVN was a private college and I was president of my class and previously enrolled in and RN program but due to the military I had to drop out. Long story short here in California it is very difficult to get into an RN program and complete it within the Amount of time I had here. Also they do a lottery system. It is just very difficult here. anyways just trying to find some input before I sign up for this.

Hello, has anyone used their AAS in Nursing from Excelsior to obtain employment in Australia? This is my end goal and I'm curious if Excelsior will be able to get me there. Thanks!

Joe

Well, here it goes.

LPN working med-surg for 4 years, did RT for 2 years before that and then got my ADN from EC. Spent 2 years working ICU then, 6 years might be 7 now of behavioral health. During those same 6-7 years I have done per diem home health and LTC. I start my new job as a ER nurse next week and will drop down to per diem in behavioral health.
