Excelsior College or College Network

Nursing Students Excelsior

Published

I am eager to find an LPN to RN program. I obtained information on both Excelsior College:uhoh3: and College Network. It appears that the transition maybe easier with Excelsior College but I am not sure. Does anyone know which would be a better choice. LPN for 1 year and ready to move on.

you can do all your pre-req coruses just like the nsg concept, study for each sub. register with excelsior college take the exam. when your ready you enroll and the credits you have earned are applied to your degree.

Specializes in ICU, PICC Nurse, Nursing Supervisor.

how long does it take after you apply for admission to get accepted. then how long does it take to get the transcripts looked at and your pre-classes approved. just curious trying to get things together to see if i can do the ec thing if i dont get accepted at my local cc.

It took about 3 wks , I am sending my enrollment paper work this wk It will be about 1-2 wks when I hear that I am enrolled, just long enough for my check to clear. then I will take NC3, I requested a NSG catalog it has alot of info about degree requirements,It says you can't take the CPNE until you have finished all NC.

Specializes in Med/Surg, ER and ICU!!!.

But from what I understand you can apply to take the clinicals after you have passed NC 4.

I graduated this year and to apply for the CPNE I had to have completed ALL of my NC tests and I think 21 credits of the 31 General requirements credits as well. If you've heard different than I would suggest contacting EC to get the correct info.

You should have done your homework because college network is just a publishing company. You could've saved a ton of money just going through excelsior.edu. They give you content guides to study from and you just read exactly what they say. Also, they have practice tests (200 questions) for you (at $60) but it has saved me and helped me with what I needed to study more of.

Good luck.

The statement regarding applying for the CPNE after NC4 is incorrect. You are not eligible to take it until you have completed the 7th test and you have 21-31 of the gen eds. It may have changed since you wrote this, but it is a fact now.

Specializes in NP / USAFR Flight Nurse.

From Excelsior's website:

" You are eligible to take the CPNE if you

  • are currently enrolled in the Excelsior College associate degree in nursing program,
  • have completed the required nursing theory examinations
  • have completed at least 21 of the 31 required general education credits, and
  • (for those enrolled after September 30, 2007) have completed the three Focused Clinical Competencies Assessment (FCCA) simulations."

Hope this helps :)

Do you know how much it will cost approx through Excelsior? I have been an LVN for one year and had the college network come talk to me but if I go through Excelsior can I test out of the courses like I can with the college network? Also can you get financial aid with Excelsior? Thanks ahead for the info.

You do not have to do both. You can go through directly EC and by pass all the publishing companies. All the books you can gt off E-bay for pennies and you can get a outline what you need to study from EC. You can complete Concepts 1 and 2 before enrolling and if you are a LVN then you can skip Concept 2 completly. EC warns their students of signing with publishing companies such as CN or RUE. You can save thousands of dollars by doing some research in the distance learning forum. As far as your preclasses you can get the offical CLEP books at discount book stores or off line. There ways to get around spending all this money...

Has anyone had any problems with there state board, not allowing EC grads to sit for board.. I am currently a LPN student, and I also want to pursue my ASN or BSN, will working as a LPN.

HI Diamond01 I just read your message and wondered if you indeed signed on with Excelsior College?? I had the best experience. When they were still under Regent's College I was an LPN for about eight years and three other LPN's went with me and our hospital wouldn't pay for it because it was an external degree program. Well we all did good. It took us 3 1/2 years to get our RN because we waited for each other and took the tests together. I was the only one that decided to go one for my BS and now after being a nurse manager in hospitals and a Director of Nursing in a nursing home I am proud to say I am teaching an LPN program. It is awesome!!!!!!!!!! It took me 6 1/2 years to do the BS because I only did one class and took my time. I had to go through a publishing company for my books because at that time they didn't have books and study guides available like they do now. I had no problem with Rue Publishing co. They were great and charged me what I could pay. They always sent my books on time and when I had questions they were kind. You don't have to use them but I had no choice but I think I still would have because I did well with their materials. Good Luck, SHULL :lol2:

i know i'm late and you probably already have the answer. but...you have to go through ec, they are the degree granting college. college network is a publishing company only they furnish study guides..thats it.
