Nursing Students Excelsior

Published

Ok, just got an update from a friend of mine who has been in contact with the CABRN. They have confirmed that Excelsior graduates who graduated after the cut off date can not only NOT apply for initial licensure, nor can they even apply for endorsement. They are flat out denying everybody because of the lack of clinical experience concurrent with theory. Even if you have worked as a RN in another state with sufficient experience, they wont even look at the application. But they will surely take your money just to deny you. For those of you who are lucky enough to live in a state that accepts the education, count your blessings as you are truely blessed to have Excelsior as an option. Unfortunately not all of us are lucky. Good Luck to all!

fair warning, here in california, the brn will not accept indiana state university bridge program either. they were making a big stink over this a couple years ago, that people could be out a lot of money with no rn license to show for it.

i'll so glad i'm getting my initial license here in california, that way they will always have to accept my license if i move back in a couple of years. i currently plan to move to my first nurse job anyway that excepts me. i'm so glad i came into nursing relatively young, when i still have the option to move as needed.

as for the charge that it is unfair that california doesn't accept excelsior, welcome to life. life is not fair. more states then not accept excelsior. you will just have to pratice nursing in a state that does accept it.

really? indiana state university is accepted in ca. it was on the brns website recently, did they take it off? from my understanding that's the only program that ca will accept. iom, the brn shouldn't be posting out of state schools that they accept because the brn is in no position to accredit a nursing program that's out of state, and they are in no position to say that excelsior isn't an accredited program when in fact they are.

Hmmm...seems to me that CA BRN could consider themselves partially responsible for soooo many openings for travel and staff nurses since their state doesn't have enough nurses to fill shortages. Instead of testing for desired qualifications and even making some $$ off mandatory classes for licensure (as we all know the state of CA needs), let's just say "No!" and leave our patients with frazzled nurses working short-staffed. Smart move!

California may claim to be short on nurses but I have many nurse friends that just got there RN's after being LVN's for many years there and they can't find jobs! The hospitals and such claim that it's because they don't have RN experience. Really? So they would rather pay travelers or better yet foreignors to work. No wonder why that state is broke. I am originally from Ca but I wouldn't go back there if ya paid me to.

Specializes in Cardiac.

I hate this for you guys out in CA! It just sucks! I know VA has extra requirements which I am working around, but I its easy for me because I live on the NC line. NC has no restrictions on EC. I would look at some of the options that the non-cooperating states are doing in order for EC grads to get licensed and speak to your state Representative. honestly, it may not help but I would think EC would be pushing to get stipulations in place for their grads.

I don't get it, why are they requiring RNs who were previously LVNs to have experience as RNs. Geez Louise LVNs are nurses too. As a LVN I get my OWN patient load in the hospital. I can hang blood in CA. I only call the RN if I have an IV antibiotic or need the initial assessment of the new admit. I take over afterwards. So I don't see how a new RN would need RN experience. It's a joke!

Regarding Excelsior, I'm going through with it because I'm moving either to Florida or Arizona and they accept Excelsior. CA may or may not license me but I really don't care. They have a lot to learn anyway. Good Luck to all

Probably a couple people on the board who lost promotions to Excelsior grads...lol!

You know, you may have something there....only a deep unresolved anger can act so irrationally....

I feel so bad...California will not even allow established nurses to endorse in anymore. Who does they think they are, anyway?? I know many nurses who graduated from Excelsior years ago and have gone on to do great things and have great careers. Why was it ok 20 years ago but not today? I've seen terrible nurses that went to "traditional" programs. I am stuck looking for a job at the VA or Naval Hospital, now. When I started Excelsior in 2009, they were still accepting Excelsior grads on a case-by-case basis for reciprocity. Excelsior knew and never told the Cali students. Nice. So frustrated. :(

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.

Excelsior can only go by what the BRN tells them, which isn't much. I know people who endorsed in as late as 2009, but they had been continuously enrolled since 2003 (before Cali's deadline). As with any state that has caveats regarding our EC degree, you take your chances. I'm sorry it isn't working out for you. :(

So, I am a native Californian, living in Asheville, NC. I just became an LPN here. I want to go back home to live and work. Steer clear of Excelsior? I just want to make sure...

Yep, no EC for Cali people.

I live and work in California as a Paramedic. I graduated from Excelsior in 2010. It is an excellent program. I am currently a licensed RN in Nevada. I have been trying to get licensed in California. So far I have been told to re-apply when my BSN is completed. That appears to satisfy the Calfornia BRN. Interestingly enough they will accept a BSN but it needs to be from a approved college. I am attending . I will let you know if I am successful!
