4550- Evidence Based Nursing

Published

From looking at the classes starting in fall, I'm guessing that Evidence Based nursing is replacing Research? Anyone have any idea if stats is still required prior to taking this, as it was with Research?

Is asking for help from a tutor considered academic dishonesty? I seriously need help with this. Too many individual parts in the breakdown of types of research to remember in a week. Too many subtle differences. The book doesn't make sense most of the time.

If I get an article from OU library, I do not put retrieved from. I put it in my references as an article from a journal...after reading the article, I click on the article name from alice or whichever data base I'm using and it gives you all the info you need to reference it, journal name, authors, volume, issue etc. I've not been marked off for doing it that way.

Yep, did it the same exact way and lost one full point. This is the most inconsistent system I've ever seen. So now I'm paranoid about losing any little point that may cause me to fail the course. The librarian had no idea either! So, I fired off an email...we'll see what the brilliant response is. Thanks for your feedback.

I use the doi number if it has one. If not, I used retrieved from blah blah blah

Was told by TA to go to the journal website and retrieve that URL. Journals from the OU library don't have that info up in the search bar...this is becoming a real PITA!

Maybe she/he means to go to the Journal's web site, you know... Journal of the American Blah blah blah. Each one probably has a web site. That's my guess.

For the life of me I cannot find a recent journal article to use on this DB!!!! Geez, this class is such a drag! It's taking up all my time! I cannot effectively search on that library website. Arggghhhhhhhhhhh

You should not need to use the "Retrieved from http//:www.website.edu/blahblahblah" if the citation used was from a print journal. The purpose of the reference is to allow the reader to find the information. The web link is where you accessed it - it may not be where the reader can access it. An example would be last week's exercise with the Fox and Chesla study. It was published in the Journal of American Academy of Nurse Practitioners - you can access the article from any one of a number of sources and you shouldn't have been required to use link in your reference. I referenced it like this, with no issues:

Fox, S. & Chesla, C. (2008). Living with chronic illness: A phenomenological study of the health effects of the patient-provider relationship. Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, 20, 109-117.

I've actually always referenced print periodicals just as above and have never had a TA take point off.

I don't have a copy of the APA citation guide (been using the Purdue OWL guide) so I don't know with absolute certainty, but would place a large wager that I'm right about this. If your TA is marking you off for not adding a web link, I would diplomatically challenge him/her to provide the reference in the APA guide that states that it's required. I'll wager they can't.

Can anyone open the link to the article for week 3 DB post? I have emailed my TA and of course no response. I have also emailed on the Q/A and there are students asking the same question on there and of course no response. This is ridiculous. If anyone can guide me to the link that will open I would appreciate the help so much. First posting is due Friday and I have not even been able to read the article.

If I retrieve it electronically it's not a paper journal. This is so confusing. Other people are using the library and NOT writing "retrieved from." This sucks!

I found that one as well and it does not open either. I get the same message "not authorized to open" on a big grey and red page. grrrrrrrrrr

If I had taken this class in the beginning I swear I never would have moved on. Cannot Wait to leave an evaluation on this class if I make it to the end.
