Every other weekend & holidays??

Published

Hi everyone,

I will be graduating nursing school next year, and I am trying to figure out what I want to do. I was wondering what kind of positions there are out there that I do not have to work every other weekend, and a holiday. I am a huge family person, and being with my family at night and holidays is very important to me! I do not want to make a lousy salary as well.

I do not care about working one weekend a month, but the every other is something I am not interested in. What kind of jobs do you guys have and the hours? Is the pay okay as well.

Thank you!!

I have worked in the acute setting as a tech for two years. I may not be a nurse at the present moment, but I have done my fair share of nights, and weekends. I do not need to pay any dues.

When you graduate and pass NCLEX, you will not be someone with any nursing experience as an RN, and you will be hired on that basis. Sorry, but those years as a tech will not count towards nursing experience. So you will have not, in fact, paid any time-in-grade "dues"-equivalent. You'll be a new grad, period.

As to your using the RN in your name, no, you cannot use it until you have a license in hand. Saying you will earn it is nice but not germane.

As to your not liking what people post and feeling misunderstood (not to mention seriously dissing a lot of people who are way ahead of you in both nursing experience and education, something you might want to avoid in person when you meet more of us in the workplace), when you post something and vast numbers of readers misunderstand it, it may have more to do with your words than our eyes and brains. The fact that you didn't mention your tech years may have accounted for the vehemence of some responses, as you came off as someone totally clueless about what working in a nursing setting is all about. You didn't "simply ask what people do," although you got to it at the end. You said,

...and the bolded parts are what people saw and responded to.

If you had said, "I've been working as a tech all shifts for a couple of years, but I'll be graduating soon and would like to hear about other work options, especially about working shifts, weekends, and holidays. Because I've got family, I'd like to minimize the nights and holidays away from them if at all possible, though I've seen the nurses I work with rotate and take their turns on weekends and holidays. Is there any chance that a new grad could get a job with less of that? Does anyone here have one, or had one when they were new? What should I look for when I'm job-hunting? What's a reasonable beginning salary to expect?" I think you might have gotten a totally different set of responses.

So, LucianotanRN, you have a lot to learn about lots of things. Since I fully expect your outburst to cause this thread to be closed any minute, I don't expect you'll be learning a lot of it here, but I wish you luck.

Actually where I live we can make about $28 an hour. I was generally asking for others input of what kind of jobs they do, and their hours. And thank you for your incredibly straight to the point comment, you must be one of the ICU nurses that is completely rude to a family thats family member is dying, and they want them to live, and as a nurse you probably just come out with that its a 5 second google search to see why they are dying.

Maybe if you read the post that I just wrote that you replied to, I said that there are ACUTE hospital jobs, that are one weekend a month. Use your critical nursing thinking skills and read!

Honestly, you have come back and answered pretty much every single question that you originally asked. Since you already know where there are acute care jobs in your area and how much they make, I have to wonder ...... Why even post to begin with??

You posted on a public forum & your post was rather vague. Have you never posted on a forum before?

How could you assume how a person posts is related to their nursing care? You could've searched AN or Google. But you posted here & by doing so you opened yourself up to everyone & their opinions.

dont worry I requested to be taken off this site, thank you!

Well now you all have done it. Now that you've run her off who's going to come into nursing and rock it like its never been rocked before?

Does that mean we can stop trying to explain to her? Can this thread die? Alleluia.

Okay... after all the negative comments that were rude, demeaning and pretty much low.. Let me explain slightly.. I have worked in the acute setting as a tech for two years. I may not be a nurse at the present moment, but I have done my fair share of nights, and weekends. I do not need to pay any dues. I clearly know what entails being in nursing! I am sorry that all you nurses have nothing better to do with your life than tear people down.

I simply asked a question of what people do. I wrote, if you people can read, which I would assume so because you made it through nursing school, that I do not mind working one weekend a month. And I prefer to not work holidays, but understand that it will take place.

I appreciate the few that stuck up for me! Thank you! You guys actually saw my point. And furthermore, there are hospitals in my area as I researched into more detail (that are in the acute care setting) that are one weekend a month, that new grads get hired, because I have friends that do it! Soooo.. to all the negative people out there, I am sorry that your lives are not what you want and that you have to pay your dues as you say. I will be receiving my RN degree... There are many jobs out there for RN's that are not only in the acute setting. Maybe some of you did not know that.

So in closing this, thank you for all your input, it made me that much more willing to prove you all wrong in a year! :) and I will continue working my dues as a tech, wiping poop, vomit, drawing blood, and doing what I do best! Smile and know that I am making something better of myself, and knowing that I have the respect to people, patients, and life and general.

One more thing... just like how most of you couldn't show nothing but rudeness to me, shows me how lousy you are probably as nurses. Inconsiderate, rude, and not understanding. If you can tear someone apart on a thread, instead of just answering a question, you need to look at your own heart, and see what kind of person you are. For nurses, online bullying in one of the lowest things you people in the medical field should do..

Thank you so much for your time! :)

Holy arrogance!

If you think the people here are mean, just wait until you actually have to work with real-life nurses on a unit. You better get a grip before you get burned. Teching on a unit does not make you an expert on the field. K thanks bye.

It says a lot that you changed your screen name with RN behind it when you haven't finished school or taken the NCLEX yet.

You think you are so entitled just because you worked as a tech. Working as a tech might help you get a job but it won't count toward anything. You're not a nurse & it is illegal to pretend to be one.

So yes, you still have to "pay your dues" because you haven't worked as a nurse. I know I have to put my time in when I become an RN even thought I've been an LVN for 5 years. I'm still not an RN.
