Every other weekend & holidays??

Published

Hi everyone,

I will be graduating nursing school next year, and I am trying to figure out what I want to do. I was wondering what kind of positions there are out there that I do not have to work every other weekend, and a holiday. I am a huge family person, and being with my family at night and holidays is very important to me! I do not want to make a lousy salary as well.

I do not care about working one weekend a month, but the every other is something I am not interested in. What kind of jobs do you guys have and the hours? Is the pay okay as well.

Thank you!!

Okay... after all the negative comments that were rude, demeaning and pretty much low.. Let me explain slightly.. I have worked in the acute setting as a tech for two years. I may not be a nurse at the present moment, but I have done my fair share of nights, and weekends. I do not need to pay any dues. I clearly know what entails being in nursing! I am sorry that all you nurses have nothing better to do with your life than tear people down.

I simply asked a question of what people do. I wrote, if you people can read, which I would assume so because you made it through nursing school, that I do not mind working one weekend a month. And I prefer to not work holidays, but understand that it will take place.

I appreciate the few that stuck up for me! Thank you! You guys actually saw my point. And furthermore, there are hospitals in my area as I researched into more detail (that are in the acute care setting) that are one weekend a month, that new grads get hired, because I have friends that do it! Soooo.. to all the negative people out there, I am sorry that your lives are not what you want and that you have to pay your dues as you say. I will be receiving my RN degree... There are many jobs out there for RN's that are not only in the acute setting. Maybe some of you did not know that.

So in closing this, thank you for all your input, it made me that much more willing to prove you all wrong in a year! :) and I will continue working my dues as a tech, wiping poop, vomit, drawing blood, and doing what I do best! Smile and know that I am making something better of myself, and knowing that I have the respect to people, patients, and life and general.

One more thing... just like how most of you couldn't show nothing but rudeness to me, shows me how lousy you are probably as nurses. Inconsiderate, rude, and not understanding. If you can tear someone apart on a thread, instead of just answering a question, you need to look at your own heart, and see what kind of person you are. For nurses, online bullying in one of the lowest things you people in the medical field should do..

Thank you so much for your time! :)

There are many non-acute job out there for nurses but you will not make the money I make, not even close.

If you are okay with making low 20s an hour or less then go for it but don't whine that can't have your cake and eat it too.

Being critical of a ill-thought out question doesn't make us lousy nurses. Your questions could have been answered with a 5 second google search or a few minutes browsing this site.

It's not that hard.

Actually where I live we can make about $28 an hour. I was generally asking for others input of what kind of jobs they do, and their hours. And thank you for your incredibly straight to the point comment, you must be one of the ICU nurses that is completely rude to a family thats family member is dying, and they want them to live, and as a nurse you probably just come out with that its a 5 second google search to see why they are dying.

Maybe if you read the post that I just wrote that you replied to, I said that there are ACUTE hospital jobs, that are one weekend a month. Use your critical nursing thinking skills and read!

I'm not a fan of saying "you have to pay your dues", but I AM a fan of saying "you aren't worth better pay without better experience" and "more desirable jobs to go those with more experience to offer".

But using your OWN preferred phrase.....you HAVEN'T "paid your dues" because you have been working as a tech. One thing that will stand out for you in your future job search is that tech experience tends to count for very little, at least outside of the same facility you were working in as a tech. Meaning that the most senior tech, been there teching for ten years, now becomes a new grad nurse....and is at the bottom of the seniority list for PTO requests when it comes to nursing. Just how it is.

The point being made (some nicer, some not so nice) is that having a well-paying job AND having it be preferred hours for most nurses isn't something that should be reasonably expected. MIGHT it happen? Of course, and people gave you the outlying examples. WILL it happen? Probably not.

For the most part, if you want to earn good money (this IS what you asked about) you will likely work the less-desirable shifts. More desirable shifts will offer less compensation, just as a rule of thumb.

Lastly, you did make a HUGE leap to an illogical conclusion by saying that those who responded in a manner you didn't like must be "lousy nurses". Apples and oranges. Kind of like saying "you didn't balance your checkbook in three months?? You must be a lousy tech!!" ;)

Lousy nurses as in the way they portray themselves, and have nothing better to do than tear someone apart! Sorry I did not specify for you. I understand the concept of you are saying, thank you!

Ouch, THAT was stepping in it...mistake. Really.

I see you changed your name; you'll need to change it AGAIN, and pronto: you are not allowed to use the term 'Nurse', 'RN' or 'LPN' unless you have earned that designation.

As you have not yet graduated nor passed the licensing exam, you cannot use that title. Please change it.

And yet your screen name has RN in it. I'm pretty sure that's a TOS violation since you are misrepresenting yourself.

(posting at the same time as previous person)

I will earn it. thank you! :)

You can use it WHEN you earn it and not before. Please change it.

Well 28 an hour is substantially less than I make and it is very rare for outpatient jobs to pull that kind of cash for new grads. Do you have a source? There are one weekend a month jobs but they are not common and it depends on union/non-union.

Straight to the point is how I like it. You must be a seer or soothsayer if you can judge my nursing skills and bedside manner off of a forum post. Bravo.

If you do happen to snag your "dream" hospital job and I am on the RRT/code team that responds to your "code" you can bet Ill address your probable inane floundering regarding the patient's condition with a 5 second google search or a sarcastic quip.

Good luck.

dont worry I requested to be taken off this site, thank you!

FWIW, you don't need to request anything; you can change your User ID via your own user tools (Dashboard) and you can choose to delete your account or stay and learn from what others have been sharing with you. Might make the difference between a good first year as a nurse or a horrid one, truly.

Same with the NCLEX Discussion Forum: if you don't need it, so be it. But if you DO....you won't want THIS to be the last set of posts you make before asking for help :(
