Equipment for Nursing School

Published

Just curious if anyone knows if there is a restriction on which stethoscope we use for nursing school (Ivy Tech). I would like to get mine ordered but didn't want to spend a lot of money on something that I cannot use in school. Stipulations such as colors, etc. Thank you.

Contact the nursing department at your school and find out. Generally, as long as you can hear through it, you're golden.

Personally, I say it's okay to invest in one you really like. Most of the ones on the market hurt my ears, so I LOVE my Littmans. I've had mine for over 10 years, and they're fantastic. You'll likely use it beyond nursing school, so that's something to consider.

Congratulations on getting in!

I start in the Fall and am anxiously waiting for our class registration so I can get all the information on stethoscope, scrubs, shoes, books, watches, etc. But they said it won't be until the summer! I like to plan ahead so it's killing me not being able to buy anything yet! I do think I'm going to invest in a good stethoscope though. Probably either the cardiology III or Master Cardiology. I know they are really expensive, but I'll spend the money if I know I'll be able to use it for years to come:)

Well if you have the money, buy a Littmann. Cheapest is 50-80 and they're totally worth it.

Thanks everyone!!! I went ahead and purchased the littman classic II! I got confirmation that ivy tech does not have any stipulations. I'm so excited..even if I don't start until the fall!!

Call your nursing department- sometimes graduating classes leave their old scrubs for incoming classes. You can pick through and save yourself a few bucks that way!

Watches usually don't have any stipulations, except for maybe a sweeping hand (no digital watches, though I've always done fine with mine).

I was like you- I wanted to get a jump start ASAP on all of that stuff! Plus, it took me until 2 months into the semester to find shoes that met their criteria AND worked for my funky feet. Ended up with Danskos (after trying to avoid spending that kind of money) after 2 other pairs either fell apart or had other problems.

any stethoscope will do I had a cheap one throughout my nursing school and worked good enough as long as I was able to hear through it then i was good. Now that im graduating i am going to upgrade

I went to Ivy Tech and we didn't have any restrictions. Definitely get a name tag for your Littmann or have it engraved - you don't want it walking off. Good luck!

If I was the entrepreneur type I would have invented LoJack for stethoscopes.

Would anyone suggest getting a nurse tote? I will already have my backpack, but I wasn't sure if this is something I should get to keep supplies separate. Thank you.
