Nursing Students TEAS

Published

Since ATI provides no student assistance to interpret scores, let's help each other! If enough of us enter our complete TEAS scores, we'll be able to compare notes to see how we rank in different programs, what to aim for if your school requires a Program percentile rank rather than a series of scores, etc. There is another thread where people are sharing their scores, but it looks like most people are just sharing their Adjusted Individual Total Score or whatever applies to their particular school. By sharing all the info, we can help each other better.

Please copy the scores below and then change them to your own, in your post! thanks! Please make sure to check your Program Type! It's right under the name of the school where you took it, on your score sheet.

Rosewater,

Wow, you really did great on your exam! You are correct. It seems that you scored approximately 25/34 correct on the math section. Given that you did not answer 7 questions, this means that of those that you did answer, you only missed about 2. So I take it that you ran out of time? If you did, then you are actually very good at math and simply need to work on speeding up your test taking on the math.

There are a lot of ways to quickly answer some math questions without having to perform any calculations whatsover. Any questions that you are able to do this would free up time for some of the more challenging (i.e. time-consuming) math questions. I have posted some examples previously on this website for tips on reducing time needed on the math. Just my 2 cents....

You should be proud of yourself even though you did not score what you needed on the math. A bit of practice on the math-speed and you will absolute destroy this test!

Regards,

LW

Rosewater,

Another thing... how come you did not at least just guess on those 7 questions? Hypothetically, you have about a 25% chance of guessing correctly for each question. This means that you likely would have scored 26/34 to 27/34, which is 76.5% and 79.4%, respectively. If you could have eliminated a one or two answers for each of those questions before guessing then you would have likely scored between 28-29/34 = 82.4% to 85.3%.

LW

Rosewater,

I forgot to account for the fact that four questions are not graded. But we have no idea which questions these were so it is difficult to guess here. At worst case, you answered correctly four questions that were not even included in your grade (in which case every question you did not answer penalized you) and at best case, you did not answer any of the four ungraded questions (in which case 4 of the 7 you did not answer did not count anyway).

The scoring on the TEAS is so weird -- not counting questions, who does that to a stressed out test-taker?! Thanks for the encouragement, guys. I really need a pat on the head, now that I have to retake the test and pay the ridiculous fee again.

@LoyalWeim, I didn't guess on the last 7 questions because I ran out of time. Trying not to lose my cookies took more time and energy than you'd think! Once I saw that I only had 2 minutes left, I finished the question I was working on and tried to get to the rest to choose an answer, but the computer was slow and I ended up watching the seconds tick by as I freaked out.

@FLstateGirl, to study, I used RainbowVahmet's post here as a guide. The program I'm applying to that requires the TEAS only looks at the reading and math sections, so it kind of kills me that I did so well on reading but so lousy on math. The English and reading sections I wasn't worried about because I was an English major for my last undergrad degree and I work as a writing/grammar tutor, so I see similar material every day. For the science section, I just finished my second semester of A&P in May and the info is still fresh in my mind, plus there was very little chem or earth science on my test -- not always the case, but I got lucky and that's what the computer threw at me. I worked a lot harder for the math. I borrowed a TEAS V study guide from my local library (not the ATI one, maybe McGraw Hill?), photocopied the math section, practice tests, and answers so that I could keep trying even after I returned the book. I spent a couple weeks watching Khan Academy videos for an hour or two every night and doing exercises on the site to practice math concepts where I knew I was shaky (hello, variations on the work formula).

I'm going to keep practicing algebra, and familiarize myself better with the kinds of no-calculations-needed questions that LoyalWeim mentioned. I'd like to retake the test no later than mid-October, because after that my schedule gets too busy to know if I'll have much study time. Cross your fingers for me that this time I manage to crack the 80s on the math section!

Rosewater,

I have zero doubt that you will do very very well in the math next time. You are clearly very intelligent and you just got burned by the time-factor. Spend time focusing more on the math and in particular time-saving strategies. And of course, if you find yourself agains the clock then GUESS! I mean you are not penalized for guessing!

I know that you will do spectacular next time around- on all sections! Hang in there!

Hello everyone! I took my test today and i got a 73.3%. Passing at my school is 62%. Reading was 76.2. Math was 76.7. Science was 66.7. English was 76.7. I found the test difficult for me especially the Science part!!! The language of questions really gave me a hard time understanding them and figuring out the answers. However, I thought I was going to do better than my score of 73.3% by =/... I'm happy I passed but still disappointed the fact that I studied hard...I was hoping for 80%. Oh well! Anyone feel the same?

oh yes, I certainly felt the same! I have to retake mine because my score isn't good enough to get into the programs I want. I definitely agree the wording is tricky!

I am studying 4 different sources mainly focusing on science because that is my weak point.

1. ATI manual

2. ATI online

3. McGraw Hill 5 TEAS Practice Tests

4. Android Pocket Prep (gotta have the on the go version)

Are there any other products you guys that did well on the science section can recommend? What would you say the test is most similar to for the science section? I am studying all, and will continue to, but would like to know what to focus on most the last day!

Well I think it all depends on which version of the test you get, however, there are the same amount of each question on every test. If you look at the break down on the practice test, it says there are 11 anatomy, 15 life science, 14 earth science and 8 scientific reasoning. This applies to every test. I would definitely say the ATI practice tests are similar to the actual test, I personally found the scientific reasoning questions the most challenging because I don't know where to find study aides for that. As for the rest, khanacademy.org is a great website. He breaks everything down and is fairly easy to understand. Have you taken Chemistry or Microbiology yet?

I've taken Microbiology and I am in chemistry right now... backwards, I know. I needed Chem to graduate before I get into the nursing program because it raised my points here in CA. Thank you for your response.

I am so excited! Just took my TEAS today and was sooo nervous because both of my ATI practice exams gave me score of 54.5 and 58.9

So here are my shocking scores :) Wish they were higher, but I'll make due.

My situation is atypical. I scored high, but not quite high enough for the program I'm applying to and my GPA (I need a really high TEAS score to compensate). I just took it for the first time yesterday, and I was able to schedule a retake for Monday, 2 days before my application is due haha. I need at least a 95 this time!
