Published

Has anyone else applied for Emory’s Distance- Accelerated BSN for Spring 2021?

I submitted my application and materials prior to the priority deadline. Waiting to hear back on Nov. 13th. Fingers crossed!

Has anyone heard back yet?

I’m in the program now. Personally we are three weeks in not sure if it’s worth the money spent. It’s a reverse classroom style so a little weird to get used to. Instead of lecturing in class we just get in small groups and discuss and then answer questions in class. We have to watch the lectures that are prerecorded on our own time but we are required to be in the zoom class times and they are 9-1 then 1:30-5 on Tuesday and same on Thursday. Then I different time 9-3 on Friday’s. We get 5-20

min breaks every hr depending on the teacher but still sometimes feels like a waste of time sitting on the zoom slots when I could spend more time studying or going over the prerecorded videos.

also there is a test every Monday for each class. No breaks during the semesters.

Y’all should try contacting the dean of the program. About you applications . But they really do wait until a couple months before to tell ppl. I found out middle of March and the program started in May for Summer 2021.

Also as a heads up be sure to have all

Vaccination records on hand, make sure you have the three hepatis b shots or get the titer test done. Make sure you have a TB test from the last 6 months no longer than that. Get your BLS certificate. You will also do a drug and background test through this website they send you.

don’t buy a stethoscope! They give us a Littman one you will get to pick your color. And they send a big duffel bag with all kinds of clinical practice supplies in it.

also if you live on west coast be ready to wake up early for zoom times and Monday exams bc everything is based on EST.

Is this program worth it? I recently went to an ABSN program out of state and hated it that I decided to drop the course and returned. The pace was crazy insane and mostly recorded lectures.

Thank you for the feedback!! It’s good to know what to expect. Do you feel like you’re learning and will be prepared for the NCLEX? I know you’re only 3 weeks in so it may be hard to say...

This was my first choice program when I decided to switch careers. I was like wow, I would get world class education and not have to relocate. I ultimately decided on an in-person experience.

I have heard wonderful experiences on this forum. However it's good to see another experience. This is very helpful to future applicants.

I don’t feel like I’m really learning anything during zoom time slots bc we are just in small groups answering discussion questions they post on Canvas (the online turn in assignment platform). I would rather them lecture over the PowerPoints during the zoom time slots I feel like that would be a better use of time rather than having to watch the prerecorded lectures on our own time before class. And you have to make sure you watch them before class or you won’t really know what teacher is questioning over in class.  The first pathopharm exam was kinda hard I didn’t study enough. Just did the first intro to nursing exam yesterday and it wasn’t bad. All teachers said Cs get drgreee and good jobs from Emory so they don’t care if we make As they just want us to pass which is helpful for ppl who stress about making As. Literally most Emory students get really good jobs offers after so I doubt they care as long as you pass the classes and the NCLEX

It’s not an awful program just hard to get used to this reverse lecture style because my whole undergrad degree was the typical lecturing during class times. Not doing that on our own time like this program is. So sometimes the zoom

sessions feel like a waste of time . Especially if I didn’t go over the prerecorded lecture material enough

Im the same way, I do better in class where an inaituvtur is teaching the material so I can ask questions in real time rather than small groups etc. But this isn’t discouraging, and I’m glad to hear they’re understanding about exam grades. At least they make it so the students still work together over zoom. What have you heard about clinicals? I’ll have to relocate for them which is fine but I’m really anxious to hear exactly what that time frame looks like.

This is all really good to hear! Thanks everyone for letting us know about the program! I was wondering since we wouldn't meet in person when/how do you practice the hands on material before going into clinicals? Do we learn and practice everything in those two weeks in Atlanta?

Are you able to score A’s in the course? Does it seem impossible for everyone?

@lilysmom21 is it possible to work and attend this online school?

Yes but the small groups over zoom isn’t much value bc a lot of group members don't talk or answer the questions. It’s not really helping to study. and nothing about clinicals yet they don’t start until august for us
