El Centro students Spring '06

U.S.A. Texas

i know some of us have received our letters so i was wondering who else i will be making this journey with for the next 2 years.

my name is allison shaffer and it's nice to meet you. i know we will all be close because it's a small group. it would be nice to get to know some of you before november 17. :)

Do "they" really want El Centro students as much as all of the teachers claim? I've often wondered if we're as wanted as much as we're told haha.

I just graduated in December(passed the NCLEX on 1/5/06 and am now a real RN!:)). I don't think there was anyone in our class who didn't find a job. There are a few hospitals and nurse managers who prefer BSN students to ADN students, but that is rare.

I have heard nurses say that ADN students have better clinical skills than BSN students, but I never had anyone say, "Wow, you went to El Centro, I can't wait to hire you!"

FYI, if you want a job in a speciality area like L&D, NICU, Pedi or ICU, the best way to get one is to work as a tech on that floor while still in school. That is how I got my job in L&D. There are lots of jobs in Med/Surg and Tele; it's the more specialized areas that are harder to get into.

Good luck with school!

You're probably right, Funny. They probably knew that it was something they didn't want to do. I don't know why they accepted their spots...ARGH that makes me mad :angryfire Good luck to you though! You have to start the countdown soon! I will be on the lookout for it!

Katie, we are all in different clinical groups. I think there are 5 groups of 10. But there are two groups who have 9. We all have lecture together but that's it. AND the lecture teacher that everyone swears to stay away from is not that bad. I think she just has high expectations and that's it. Of course, it was only the first day but she really didn't seem that bad. Someone in our class actually asked her if she is really as bad as everyone says she is :rotfl: That's what I call guts....

That's funny that your water main broke in your first week b/c that happened at EC a couple of semesters ago hahaha. I think it's students doing it!!!!! just kidding...

Also, have any of you checked out that MedsPub website? I think it's an awesome site. I have been toying around with it the last couple of hours and I think there's lots of valuable and helpful info on there.....

Meds pub must be pretty popular--we are uising it at our school too.

Who is your clinical instructor? We only have 9 in ours too. I have Stanfield. Yeah there were a lot of people stuffed in that room. I was trying to think of what to say when it came to my turn. lol

I'm still here and loving it. I tried to listen for ya'll during lecture. There were so many of us stuffed in that room I couldn't see everyone that was speaking.

There are only 9 in our clinical. The instructor said they would probably fill the spot next week, if at all. We all really love our instructor. As far as lecture goes, I agree that it wasn't as bad as everyone said. I feel alot better going into week 2. Now, if I can manage to finish all of my reading, writing, and charts, etc... I'll be set! I usually get to lecture really early so I'll keep looking for everyone. Good luck!

Congrats... and God Bless!!!

Hello everyone. Just wanted to tell you all that I passed the HESI exam a while back and am officially DONE with EL Centro FOREVER :rotfl:

I wanted to wish you all good luck! Have a great first semester!

I have Stahl (IHS). I may have already met you and just not realized it. I almost picked Mesquite Community for the location and then heard that it was not a good idea.

Ok now I have to ask why wasn't it a good idea. LOL Was it the teacher or the hospital?

LauraLou, thank you so much for the insight. I was interested in working in the NICU and it's good to know I need to be working on getting my foot in the door. If you don't mind me asking, which hospitals do you think are the ones to work at? I am not really informed on what's good in a hospital and what isn't. Thank you for any advice! :)

Christy, I have Darensbourg at the VA so I don't think we have seen each other yet :( I have a couple of acquaintances in your group though. I met one lady who has light blond hair and is really petite. I think she told me her name was Kim. Then I met another girl who is really young with long brown hair......but I haven't seen you.

Well, I have long brown hair but I'm not young! HA HA! I think you are talking about Beth and Kim. Do you have a Kyle in your group? He was in my micro class. In lecture I sat in the front row a few seats away from Kyle. By the way, I'm sorry but I couldn't remember for sure, but your name is Allyson, right? See you on Thursday (Maybe!!)

Hey Christy :) Yeah, my name is Allison and yes there is a Kyle in my group. I think he kept saying that he was trying to get into y'all's group but he got "stuck with us" hahaha. I walked by your class today with Kyle and I was trying to figure out which one was you. (It was during the drug testing thing...). I guess we'll see each other someday!!!!! :rotfl:

What about next Monday?

Are you all going to be there at the seminar at EC sometimes afternoon? The whole NL class will be there so that will be a good opportunity to see each other in person.
