Congrats, Allison

I didn't get the extern ship at Scottish Rite either, I didn't think there were still options to apply at other places. Then I heard about Methodist , but when i called they said they weren't excepting any more applications. :o I was to late.

Now I am trying to get into a Nurse tech position. I applied at several places last week and actual got a call back the next day from Baylor when I wasn't home. I've been calling every day since, and all I ever get is an answering machine, of course I leave messages. I guess it's just not that easy now, everyone is trying to get a job over the summer.

I am getting a little worried, how will it look , if I have nothing to show for other than my clinicals , when we graduate. At Charlton they actually told me they don't want to hire senior nursing students for tech positions anymore only for extern positions. Do everyone in your class works as a tech or CNA or has an Extern position?

Thank you Mysterious!!!

Me and one other girl in my senior 4th level are the only ones who have Externship positions. NO ONE has gotten a position as an Extern anywhere ... if they did, they're not sharing. There are maybe 4 or 5 people who have tech or CNA jobs and the rest just don't work or they work somewhere completely unrelated to Nursing. A friend of mine just quit her tech job at Baylor. She said they loaded 15-18 patients on her a day to give baths, check blood sugars, deliver trays, and change beds. That was way too many patients and she couldn't take it anymore. She quit after just being there a couple of weeks. Parkland said they were looking for student nurses...have you checked out their website? I really wouldn't get too wrapped up in finding a job. I mean, yeah, if you want to work then that's great but I wouldn't throw in the towel and think that you're not going to get anything on graduation due to lack of experience.

I have some good news :D I got an Externship in the ICU at Dallas Methodist!!!! WAHOO!!!! I start June 11th. I was so nervous that I wasn't going to get it because there were so many people interviewing for it. I am so blessed!!!!!!

Congrats again!!! I also start June 11th... (Postpartum/Newborn Nursery) I wonder how many people are going to be in that group?? I honestly thought they had way too many nursing students there and not enough positions to go around. I saw alot of people walking out without jobs... I guess they wanted to have a variety to choose from? Thank goodness we got what we wanted though!!!!

My best friend works at Parkland in L&D as a student nurse and she LOVES that hospital. Call ahead to see what's available, but I know that you must apply in person!

thanks Allison,

I don't have to work for financial reasons, I really thought more for experience, and that future employers might frown upon you if you have been a stay at home mom for years and done nothing else otherwise (even though I had my own small business: sewing/alterations).

I did apply at Parkland, too.

On the other hand , it's kind of bothering me to think , I have to sit around and wait....., because maybe I should take this time off, and do something fun with my kids and husband.

I know that I won't have a chance to do that in the next year, and probably not next summer either, since we will be graduating and possibly starting in a new position right away.

Hey, I read in one of your other posts you went to a job fair, where did you go? Did El Centro told you all about that? Or you found out yourself?

I was shocked too at how many people they invited to that thing! I was getting very nervous because they kept saying that there were X amount of people applying in the ICU and there were only 2 positions for December graduates and 2 positions for May graduates. ER, ICU, and Women's Services were just swarming with people interviewing! Go us!!!! :D

YAY! We'll be in orientation together! Are you in Group 1?

I would spend the time with my kids and my husband. This will be the last time you'll be able to have a true summer vacation. I would enjoy every minute of it! You won't be frowned upon with lack of experience. From talking with people at various hospitals, it's more your personality that shines through than anything else. God has a plan for us. I strongly believe that! You will find that perfect job! I interviewed about a million different places and was down in the dumps thinking I wouldn't ever find anything and this opportunity came along. A friend of mine told me about the job fair the night before I went and it all worked out and I went. I know they usually have one in September or October and I will let you know when that one is when I find out...El Centro doesn't tell us JACK!

This is what I was told...I am not positive on this information:

CCU- 4

ICU- 4

ER- 2

Transplant - 4

Dialysis-4

NICU- 4

Ortho/Neuro - 4

Postpartum/ Newborn- 4, right Brie?

Cardiac Intermediate Care Unit- 2

L&D- 4

Telemetry- 4

OR- 2

So I guess that's a total of roughly 36-40 positions??? I can't remember any of the other floors? There had to have been over 100 people there just by looking at the stack of applications. It was all very organized and I was really impressed!

Congrats y'all! :)

I know a couple of 2nd semester people that got externs positions. I wish now that I did apply as well.

After I applied to the one Scottish Rite extern, I began to wonder if I would make it through the semester. So, I didn't even apply for any other extern positions. Oh me of little faith, I guess. haha

Something will open up for me when it's suppose to, if it's suppose to. I have filled out some online applications for tech positions. I just have to find one that will be willing to work with my clinical/lecture schedule, of course. ;)
