i know some of us have received our letters so i was wondering who else i will be making this journey with for the next 2 years.

my name is allison shaffer and it's nice to meet you. i know we will all be close because it's a small group. it would be nice to get to know some of you before november 17. :)

Hi everyone!!

I am in the Dallas area too. I am going to apply to El Centro for Fall 06 and wanted to ask you all a few questions. I have taken all Pre-reqs and support classes except Micro and A&P II and my elective (Spanish). I have a 4.0 and will be taking both Micro and A&P II next semester (Spring 06). For those of you who have been accepted, how many hours had you completed when you applied and what was your GPA? I am wondering if I even have a slight chance on admission.

Specializes in ante/postpartum, baby RN.
Do you think that it is a good idea to sign up? Do the people in the nursing program ie faculty think that it is an advantage?

I think it's a good idea to join your nursing student association.

I know that they have pharmacology review seminars and meetings where outside speakers talk about nursing specialties. I just signed up at the orientation, so I don't know much more about them.

I had 4.0, but I didn't finish all the support classes.

It think you have a good chance. Good luck. :)

Oh sure 78-82 is a C

83-89 is a B

90-100 is a B

I have another question about classes.

Can you take a non-nursing class while taking all the nursing courses? I mean, can you remain sane and get good grades, too? :uhoh21:

It depends on the person.....really! I'm sorry if that doesn't help, but only you know what kind of student you are and what type of study habits you have. I COULDN'T DO IT! I took EVERY BIT of my support classes before I got in because I didn't want to have to juggle them during the semester of feel obligated to take a course over the summer. On the other hand, I had a classmate in third semester who was taking all the nursing classes plus Microbiology in her spare time.......whenever that was LOL!

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

I think your GPA is awesome and you have a great chance at getting in! The competition changes each semester...this semester was especially tough : 4.0 pre-reqs. and 9 hours supports completed with a 4.0 at El Centro...and 4.0 pre-reqs. and 6 hours supports completed with a 2.5 at Northlake.

I start El Centro in the Spring '06 and I have everything completed so I think that was a big advantage for me. I am glad it's over!!

Have you signed up for Micro and AP II? Where are you taking them at??? I don't think I could do both in one semester and I look up to you for tackling that. I am always here to help with Micro or AP II and I am sure everyone else here would be more than willing to help you. :)

Please keep us updated!! You should check out the DCCCD '06 thread in the pre-nursing student. There are some people in there applying for Fall '06.

Hello Everybody!! I'm hoping to be apart of the Spring '06 class. I have applied for El Centro's distance learning program, and all letters/phone calls should be made by Jan 10. I have orientation on Dec 5, so I will keep you all updated!!

The distance learning program is offered to Texas Health Resources employees at Harris Methodist Fort Worth, and Presbyterian Hospital-Dallas. It's requirements are pretty much the same as El Centro, except you have to complete A&P II and Micro before beginning. They accept 40 students each semester, and it's not nearly as competitive, but still extemely difficult from what I've heard b/c most employees work full-time. Because THR pays for everything, you will have to sign a contract. All lectures and clinicals will be completed at the hospital you choose. I don't know for sure if I will have to go to El Centro. I did take my NET test there, and I've been working with Joan Elhert in the Health Occupations Office. Our info session is Dec 5th so hopefully I will have all my questions answered! I do know that I will graduate from El Centro. I am a little concerned b/c the deadline is Dec 20th, and we were told that we would be notified within 3 weeks. Well, that means that we won't know until around January 10th, so how will we be able to get our uniforms and what not before classes start?? Plus, the school and it's employees are gone for the Christmas holiday, so wouldn't that delay the process? So far, the only adjustments that they have made, is to allow unoffical transcripts b/c classes don't end for some people until Dec 17 and grades post on the 20th, but the schools are closed so you cannot get your transcript. Anyways... I hope that I will get you meet you all sometime before graduation!!

Brie,

I think that is so cool that you get to do that! I wish I would have known about something like that before I applied! You will definitely have to keep us updated!

I wouldn't worry about the date issues b/c if that's one thing El Centro is is last minute!! I am sure it will all work out fine. You will have to let us know though...

And please keep me in mind if you need help with Micro or AP II....got As in both and absolutely LOVED Micro. :)

Did you take your pre-classes at Tarrant County or El Centro?

I took my prereq's at UTA and TCC. I was originally going to apply for UTA's program, but the wait list and their process is absolutely ridiculous! I know a couple of students with 4.0's that did not get in. Plus... my company offers a distance learning RN-BSN bridge program through UTA as well. I am totally bless to have this opportunity, and I will keep you all updated on my journey!!
