Hello,
I wanted to start a thread to see if anyone is applying for the Fall 2019 program at El Centro (hoping to get into the North Lake program). I'm getting ready to send my application and await the process. Just didn't see a thread yet and wanted to connect with my hopeful future Colleagues. I've read the Spring 2019 thread and it was exciting to see everyone come together during this process to share in this fantastic journey! I'm hoping to connect with anyone going through this experience with and hopefully also be in the program with me.

1. What is the best a&p and vocab material for the hesi? I took the hesi last weekend and missed those sections by 2 questions. I took a&p like 8 years ago so I had to relearn the material in 3 weeks! I really want to pass the next time I take it.
2. How far out did you start getting your immunizations and where did you get them? They are pretty expensive!
3. Does anyone know when we can start registering for summer classes? I didn’t see them online yet and I want to get another class done before the application is due!
Thanks in advance!
Hi! You may want to talk to someone at the school to make sure they will accept your a&p. You said you took it 8 years ago and the cut off is 5 for many schools. There are exceptions though. As for studying, I used pocket prep. It’s an app and I got a 91.2% overall. Lowest score was an 88% in A&P.

The vocab really I didn't study any extra for because I personally am vocab/English minded (was an English major pre-nursing school shift, lol) and the nursing-based vocab the HESI tests you on got refreshed studying for A&P.
2. I started getting my shots as soon as I could. I went to my GP for my annual physical, took the paper with me that I needed for my physical, and explained I needed the vaccines. I didn't have to pay out of pocket for anything except my flu shot and that was $10 at Walmart. If you have insurance and go through your doctor as an annual physical, it should pretty much all be covered.
3. Usually DCCCD starts opening registration for summer classes late April to very early May. If you're a current DCCCD student you should get an email when registration is open.
Good luck!! I took the HESI 5 times (Yeah. I know.) before I got the scores I wanted.
Thank you so much! I barely missing the passing score so I hope I’ll pass the 2nd or 3rd time I take it lol. I’ll have to look into immunizations at my doctor. I was thinking Walmart would be the cheapest option. I haven’t been at DCCCD since 2013 so I couldn’t remember when registration opened up.

Hello!! You’re right. My A&P and Micro are all expired so I’m retaking them! I am in A&P 1 right now. Thanks for the suggestion. I have that app and noticed those questions were the most challenging so those should help me pass the next time!
New here, and I applied to the fall semester, and would like to know if anyone knows if you can apply with microbiology being expired. The reason I did not submit a waiver form for micro was because I plan to retake microbiology for science major once accepted as opposed to the scit course which does not transfer as a science course. Thanks

Since Micro isn't a required prereq, I'm sure you can apply and get accepted with it being expired. HOWEVER, it is apart of the nursing curriculum, eventually you'll have to take it again in order to graduate the RN program. I suggest taking it again before Fall so it will be one class you have to take onto of your nursing courses.

I second this suggestion - It’s not an easy class and will take one of your semesters down by 4 hours - that’s a lot, and one less class and lab you have to take.
I appreciate everyone's responses and will look into taking it this summer once summer registration opens. Also, is the waiver for a course independent of the application process? I was rereading the info package, and the wording in it suggests the waiver can be done separate of the application process. Again, thanks for the suggestions.

Yes you have to petition the Health Occupations Admissions for a waiver for each course you need waived. There are instructions on the DCCCD website on what requirements you have to meet in order to petition. After you send the information in (I had to mail a letter) you will hear back via post mail. I received a letter wavier that I had to include in my nursing application. The waiver they send tells you how long the waiver is valid for. In my situation, it said I was waived to apply for the following semester then it was no longer valid.

Can you do a waiver separate from the application process? Meaning, have the app submitted and then do a waiver?

As far as I know you cannot. Things may have changed though, or if you aren't looking to waive a pre-req class there may be some exceptions. I would call the Heath Occupations office or email one of the academic advisors on for the nursing program.
