El Camino, Compton, Cypress College Spring 2020 nursing application process

Published

Hi everyone. I applied to El Camino College, Compton College and Cypress College. I was hoping we could help each other out in sharing information. This is my first time applying to any nursing program. All I know for now is that ECC is supposed to send an email to potential candidates to take TEAS on or around Oct 21. What I don’t understand is if we will get the invite around that time or if we will be TESTING around that time. It can be read either way. At compton, the lady at the front desk said they’d be behind one week for testing due to her being gone due to a death in the family. So she said that if I got an invite to take the TEAS elsewhere, to do it and then contact her so that she can tell me where to send it. All I remember from Cypress is that we should get an email by Dec 12 or so and to call the school if we don’t. But I don’t remember what they said as far as the TEAS. I guess I’m wondering if denial letters also get sent when invites for TEAS get sent. Anyway, I’d appreciate any feedback from anyone. Thanks!

Hi all of you and congrats to those who could get into the program.

I just want some advise, I applied just to the Compton program and I couldn’t make it. I mean, I haven’t received my denial letter yet, but I’m hopeless because I not even reached the points to be in the alternate group.

Up to now, I have all the requirements for transfer because I wanted to do the dual program at Dominguez in case I was accepted. My overall gpa is 3.4, sciences 3.0, my teas was just 69 (I messed up in the English portion) I’m 33 years old. No experience as a CNV or LVN, first to attend college, low income, ESL student, etc.

Well, my point is, what I can do to be an RN because I wasn’t accepted? I will keep applying and in this Spring I will apply to many other colleges. I will volunteer, but by doing that I just can increase by 2 points my score and I’m still wouldn’t be highly competitive for a spot. I cannot repeat the TEAS because in all the programs they just take the first passing score. So, my question is what can I do as a back up, I was thinking to get a CNA, then LVN and do it in that way, but I read that LVN-RN pathway doesn’t warrants me an ADN, just will gives me the chance to take the NCLEX to be a RN. With that, may I get the BSN in the dual program? I read that LBCC gives the opportunity to LVN to get the ADN by the RN-30 pathway if you have the prerequisites (I have them all) but I heard is highly competitive. The other option was to get into a private program, I only have used 2 years of my financial aid, and I don’t want a debt, but I’m considering that option. West coast is more than 100K, the other problem is that I don’t have family or relatives here just my husband and I’m a mother of 2 girls (9.5 and 5.5 years old) so, I cannot commute far from home. The only friends that I have is the ones that I’ve met in school since I came to the US 3 years ago. I’m screwed. My husband supports me, but he’s the only one working and to be here alone restraints me a lot.

I don’t know what to do, I’m lost and kinda bummed these last days. I would appreciate some advise of you guys.

Once again, congrats!

Massy, apply to LA Trade tech. They have a waitlist but you will get in. What is the point of doing all the other stuff that will take you about a year to do when u want to be a nurse? You may as well apply, get in and just wait. U passed with over 62%, so ur good there and you have a 2.5 science gpa and a 2.5 overall. So you are in! Just submit paperwork and work until u get the email that says that you are in. They take everyone who applies and meets the 2.5 overall/science gpa and they are a good school. The only problem is the wait-time. But who cares as long as u get in? That gives you time to save up and figure out all the things you need to do. Why spend 100K when you can just wait a year to a year and a half to get in. It would probably take you longer to pay that off even by getting in right now. You are not screwed. Cypress college also has a waitlist. Look into their programs.

Seriously, everyone on here should be applying to LA trade tech if it is local to u. I’ve heard from other people that their friends have been applying for many semesters and can’t get in. If you took ur TEAS already and have a 2.5 overall and science gpa, apply to the program! And then keep applying to other skls. With schools like LA trade tech and Cypress available, no one should be taking longer than 3 semesters to get into a nursing program. Use it as a back up. Shoot, I’m not planning on screwing up my shot with ECC, but life happens and u never know if you’ll have to withdraw or get out due to family issues. When I transferred to UCLA, we were told that 75% of transfers don’t make it/graduate. I said I wouldn’t be one of them, and guess what? I was. I had kids and messed everything up for me. I’m still two classes away from graduating and keep telling myself I’m going to finish those stupid classes. So just do it as a back up. When the email comes and says it is your turn and you’re already in a nursing program, just deny it. But in case u haven’t managed to get in, then accept it. It only costs the $30 for the TEAS Transcript.

Your absolute correct I didnt know those two schools had wait lists

Yup, me neither. TRust me, I was upset when I went to the orientation and found out I could have applied years ago. LA Trade tech also doesn’t have a recency requirement. I can’t remember if Cypress does. Everyone should apply. I did even though I got into ECC.

Me too, thanks @Dub. And you right, pay off a student loan will take more time that a waiting list. Absolutely correct!

Thank you so much, and kudos to you!

I applied June 2018 and Angel said I wouldn’t start until Fall 2020. And trust me I’ve been consistently applying to other schools while I wait and saving money to pay this off. I was just hoping I could start earlier since I’ve been waiting so long I just wish I knew about LATTC years ago. The waitlist is def getting longer because more and more people are finding out about this school and it’s such a good thing they do this. I’m still happy for you all! None of these schools are near me but I’m applying anywhere except west coat lol

Sam- u applied to LA trade tech in June 2018? Damn, that is long. We were told three semesters, maybe two. That’s why I submitted my TEAS cz I want it to count for this semester. I guess since I got into a program it doesn’t really matter, but I’m still anxious and want to make sure I have a back-up. When I was at their orientation there was a female there who said she had failed out of the ECC nursing program and the lady said she could still apply to theirs. I found that interesting because other nursing programs will only consider you if you left a nursing program in good standing. If you failed/flunked another program, they won’t take you. This is why I’m applying. You just never know.

So they told you for sure Fall 2020? That’s right around the corner. Good for u!

Yes, i mean when i went to do all the paperwork they even mentioned that the wait is longer because of how many people are applying. I think they said 4-5 semesters. Good for you though ECC may be tough but their NCLEX pass rates are really good, of course that depends on each person but really shows when majority of their students pass.

That is crazy, I know 1 of my co-workers got kicked out of moorpark nursing because she was 1% less than what she should have been to be consider as passing and she still hasn't been able to get into another nursing program. I've told people about LATTC at my work too, that have been waiting and no one believes me LOL. It sucks that it is a wait but at least you are guaranteed a spot. Now they are looking at west coast or other private schools. Unfortunately I am too cheap to pay that much and stubborn.

Well, when you’re all done AND paid for, they’ll still be paying off their loan. I wouldn’t take a loan like that unless it was a Masters program or graduate skl-and even then, that is way too much. My previous employer-Dentist, now 60yrs old, went to USC and took out a loan of 100K. School is freaking ridiculous now. I’m aiming for CRNA-$200K ? I would just wait. Imagine those that take that loan and don’t pass/fail??

Yeah it can be disheartening when you keep applying and still not getting into schools that you have first choice. I'm really happy I found out about LATTC through forums like these. Damn, see to me that isn't worth it if you have to be in debt like that ? OMG no way! that is exactly what my end goal is to do as well! Or CNO of a hospital but definitely CRNA. I'm not sure if you watch Youtube but there is this girl named Rhianna Ferial who is a SRNA and talks about how she is paying off school and is not in debt at all. She is pretty informative and interactive with her audience if you ever wanted to reach out to her or ask her questions.
