EKG strips on NCLEX

Nursing Students NCLEX

I have a question for people who took the Nclex.

When u get EKG's strips... What do they actually want u to know!!?? Like what kind if reading is it? Or how many decimal per beat? Or medication? What is the type of answers they r looking for us

Basically everything you mentioned as well as the rate.

When u saw a an ekg strips question, usually they'll just show u an ekg strip, it's u who will identify what kind of reading is on the strips, then the questions usually what intervention u will do like what medications u must give and sometimes they'll ask u if there's a presence of p wave, inverted t wave etc..

You might get a statement where it says a patient has x condition and then asks you what would you expect to see on an EKG. You have to pick the correct one from four six second EKG strips.

OMG... Really?!? How do u study for that?! Does anyone now of anything I can use to study that for? I'm not prepared for these EKG and my test is soon. I know rhythms and basic stuff we learned in cardiac.. But to that full extent I'm weak in for sure! :( if anyone has any help or sources I can use let me know please. Thank u guys for answering that!

What ScottE, RN said it doesn't seem that scary as it sounds :) If they will ask you e.g., pt has Afib condition what kind of rhythm would you see? So you need to know how Afib looks on the strip.

Anyway, take a look at this website acls-algorithms

You can found tons of basic information. For example some algorithms --> Ventricular Fibrillation and Pulseless Ventricular Tachycardia | ACLS Algorithms (what to do and what kind of meds you should be anticipated to be ordered by MD)

I used this website when study for ACLS. This website was sufficient for me to answer correctly all my cardiac test questions about codes/meds/nursing interventions during nursing school and for ACLS test. And honestly... I doubt NCLEX will go more advanced then this.

Look only at BASIC strips and algorithms. If you know your cardiac meds then you won't have troubles with picking up right answer.

Not sure when you have your exam but don't get caught up in studying strips for hours!

I got a strip and the question was what is the patient feeling.

I didn't get an EKG strip on mine. And out of all of my friends, only one person got one EKG strip. If you get one, that means you're doing really well anyway. I don't think they would ask anything too crazy. I would study how to calculate the HR. I would also study the different rhythms. They probably wouldn't be too crazy, because its supposed to be basic nursing care. So I would know a fib, v tach, v fib, PVCs, ST elevation, and maybe SVT. Afterall, they aren't going to ask questions on ACLS (advanced cardiac life support). For each of those rhythms you should study the interventions (meds given, if you would defibrillate, what can cause these rhythms, etc). MI's can cause dysthymias, I'm sure you know this basic stuff. Personally I have no idea what they would ask since I never had one, but thats what i would have studied. I wouldn't spend too much time on it though

I got one strip and i needed to know the treatment/intervention for it. It was easy

I had three strips. Didn't have a clue what the answer was for any of them, but I passed!

OMG I took NCLEX end of June and sadly was unsuccessful. I got quite a few strips and some were difficult. The main one I'm still haunted by showed a rhythm that I was not familiar with and wanted to know what you would do. I remember transcutaneous pacing being one of the choices but I was clueless...plan to study alot of them for the next test and watch I won't get any! I also got a lot of management delgation and priority and all 265!!

I had one strip. A rhythm was shown, and the question related to interventions for that rhythm.
