Hello all! Nursing school starts in a month and the school hasn't sent out acceptance letters yet, but I'm trying to be hopeful and prepare just in case--that's a lot of money to spend if you haven't budgeted for it ahead of time!
Has anyone used ebooks instead of regular hard-copy textbooks in nursing school? This wasn't an option when I was in college the first time, so I don't know anyone personally who has used them in lieu of regular books. I have a kindle, but I worry about it being more difficult to navigate in class or when studying, and I don't know if I would prefer to have a book that I can quickly flip through or not. I'm attracted to the fact that ebooks are cheaper though! I love my kindle, but I know page numbers will show up differently on my small screen as opposed to a large textbook, etc. Any suggestions or comments about your experience? Any advice is appreciated!
My school is a private school and instead of regular textbooks this year, they gave us all ipads and our ebooks on them. The whole class gets frustrated when the instructor refers to a page in our book , but everybody's page numbers are different because we each set ours to a different font, or size to read so we have to go through each and every page. What is cool is theres a search bar when you're reading and if you want to look something up, you can type it in and it'll find it for you.
pros: looking up information faster.
you can carry it wherever you go.
cons: page numbers
battery life
glitches
We use ebooks in my program. I personally prefer using paper books to study from, but the ebooks in our foundational skills class has highlighting you can subscribe to. The instructors will highlight important sections, and a certain color of highlighting means that this information will be on an exam. It's really helpful! Other than that, I don't like the eye strain from staring at a computer screen for too long.
I have a cardiac diseases ebook and I wish I bought an actual hard copy instead.
I like the feel of an actual book. Easier to navigate compared to ebook format and I like to be able to highlight and write my own notes. And unless you have the Kindle Dx, the formatting will probably get messed up on a regular Kindle. Kindles are great for reading, but not so great for textbooks.
my school uses elsevier books. we now use hesi final exams. the great thing about elsevier is that the have a program called pageburst. its the program we use to read the text book on our laptop. in addtion there is a website we log into so we can read our textbooks and make notes.
to be honest i don't read. i study, but i don't read. i will use the books for reference and homework. the search portion of pageburst makes things so fast.
what i love is my pda books. i have an old itouch and i bought the pda version of my text books. i can use my pda in hospital, so long as it doesn't right. i have my drug book, lab dx, nanda, med surg, medical dictionary, and a few other books. i bought the book bundle for 200 dollars. the only bad thing is that it expires after 2 years. but it has greatly improved my clinical experience. my paperwork is so much better as is my understanding of the disease and disease process. i use my pda for crtical thinking. i feel so smart.
the pda program i use is skyscape. imo it is a must, so helpful. best part is not lugging around 20lbs of textbooks to clinical and worrying about them getting stolen.
