I am currently in school for my LPN in Columbus, Ohio. I am wondering if there is any certifications I can complete while in school? My program includes IV certification... is there other I could do before I pass the NCLEX-PN?
Any suggestions would be a great help.
Thanks

The only one offhand that I can think of is IV certification which most LPN programs offer at the end (if they offer it at all) after you've completed the program. You could attempt to get ACLS or PALS certifications if you are planning on trying to work in a hospital which might require these certifications, but these could prove to be difficult for a newbie. For both, you need a class on EKG interpretation. And you need to study the course material before you even attend the two day course. They aren't easy for those with no relevant experience.

I think there is a sticky here somewhere that mentions the additional certifications available. However, truthfully, as caliotter3 stated, you need relevent experience. I really think that for now, concentrate on passing the course and the boards. These other things will be there, believe me. Good luck in your program!

Very cool that you get the IV cert, we didn't. I did take a CE course on stethoscope skills that I found to be helpful.

Remember though....that any you earn while in school won't count as CEU's towards your certification period. CEU's must be done after you get your license.
In my state you don't have to get CEUs for your first license renewal. So if not necessary for a job, you might want to consider saving any certifications that carry CEU credits for after your first renewal. But check with your state's board to find out if the same is true in your state.
