Duke ABSN Spring 2019

Nursing Students School Programs

Hello everyone!

I thought I would start a thread for prospective Blue Devils. I would love to hear about each of your backgrounds, professional experience and/or where else you may have applied. Have any of you applied to Duke's ABSN before? This might be a great place to ask questions, share insights and tips for submitting a strong application!

Me: I live in Portland, Oregon. I graduated with a BA in Psychology in 2010. Since then I have worked in domestic violence shelters, mental health crisis centers and in outpatient addiction treatment. I quit my mental health case manager job to pursue nursing almost 2 years ago now! I have been volunteering at a Burn ICU in town. I applied to USFCA in Orange County (safety!) and Johns Hopkins for Fall '18, in which I have been waitlisted. I have an underwhelming undergraduate GPA and a 4.0 in prerequisites. In my applications I've done my best to highlight my professional experience and dedication to under served and under resourced populations. I also submitted a supplemental essay explaining poor undergraduate academic performance. I did notice however that Duke's application portal doesn't have a place to upload supplemental materials. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions about how I could get this essay in front of the admissions committee?

I can't wait to hear about you all! :)

Specializes in Perinatal.

PickMePlease, what is the name of the Facebook group?

Specializes in Mental Health, Addictions.

Weird, something happened to the FB group. It isn't there anymore? Maybe there's just a temporary issue with FB?

Specializes in Mental Health, Addictions.

I'm going to DD on the 20th!

Going to Duke Days on the 13th. On another note, financial aid office said that financial aid info will be released this Friday.

If someone can send me their email, I can go ahead and make a new Facebook group since the old one got shut down for some reason. [email protected]

I think I read in a previous Duke ABSN thread that the school of nursing sends a link to those who put in a deposit to join the cohorts Facebook group.

Oh really? Let me email them!

Yea, I'm not completely sure though. You should ask for us :)

I emailed student services and they said they will send it out! :) thanks for the heads up, @bayarea123!

So I am debating currently where I am going to end up going, as Duke is a lot more expensive. It is my first choice though, I am curious, is anyone planning on living off campus in an apartment/house to save money, or are most of you living on campus?

Financial aid decision comes out Friday. For me, I wil have a better idea of whether I'll choose this school based on that, as well as Duke Days. I applied to University of Miami and their tuition is 40k. We'll see what happens.

As for housing, Duke does not provide housing for grad students (ABSN students are considered grad students). My two friends who attended Duke ABSN say that the cost of living is very low in North Carolina. Many classmates would rent a house and split the costs. He ended up paying about 400 a month with classmates.

I am definitely hoping to find some roommates and hence live off campus to save money..
