Duke ABSN Spring 2019

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello everyone!

I thought I would start a thread for prospective Blue Devils. I would love to hear about each of your backgrounds, professional experience and/or where else you may have applied. Have any of you applied to Duke's ABSN before? This might be a great place to ask questions, share insights and tips for submitting a strong application!

Me: I live in Portland, Oregon. I graduated with a BA in Psychology in 2010. Since then I have worked in domestic violence shelters, mental health crisis centers and in outpatient addiction treatment. I quit my mental health case manager job to pursue nursing almost 2 years ago now! I have been volunteering at a Burn ICU in town. I applied to USFCA in Orange County (safety!) and Johns Hopkins for Fall '18, in which I have been waitlisted. I have an underwhelming undergraduate GPA and a 4.0 in prerequisites. In my applications I've done my best to highlight my professional experience and dedication to under served and under resourced populations. I also submitted a supplemental essay explaining poor undergraduate academic performance. I did notice however that Duke's application portal doesn't have a place to upload supplemental materials. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions about how I could get this essay in front of the admissions committee?

I can't wait to hear about you all! :)

wish i had the $ to apply to Duke's ABSN but 90K for tuition only HURTS

Good luck to you all

How was Duke Days for everyone that went today!?

How was Duke Days for everyone that went today!?

For those who are not going, Duke Days was awesome! It started off with a morning introduction, simulation demonstration, tour of the facilities, tour of Duke University campus and many other places around Durham! When we had our breakout sessions with faculty, they showed genuine interest in getting to know and support students.

Current students and alumni genuinely shared their experiences, and none had anything negative to say about it. They say it's challenging but very doable.

They all seemed to love Duke. I also like how they want everyone to succeed here (no nurse left behind basically). Other schools, at least where I am from, students and faculty will mention how cohorts start with # of students but only # make it through. I think it's a 98% NCLEX rate but also rarely does a student drop out from this program. Free tutoring for nursing students, your own lockers to put books (and a shower) in the nursing building which looks amazing.

See everyone there in the Spring!

They still haven't created the Facebook group, right? Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything!

At Duke Days, one of the staff said they would create the page closer towards the start of the program. That's vague, but that's all I can recall. Perhaps they will start it once they've gone through the waitlist and confirmed everyone for the class.

Hi everyone!

My name is Bri and I will be attending Duke's ABSN program as part of the Spring 2019 cohort. I'm excited to meet everyone! I am relocating to Durham from Philadelphia and am not familiar with the area at all. I noticed some of you were asking about roommates/housing options and were waiting for the cohort's facebook page to be created. However, Duke has it's own Craiglist specifically for Duke students. (dukelist.duke.edu) A lot of people have made posts recently inquiring about roommates - including myself! If you need a roommate feel free to check my listing on DukeList out and send me an email.

Hi there guys!

My name is Anna I was recently admitted for the spring 2019 semester! I'm so excited to be moving out to North Carolina. Im originally from California but have been living in Colorado for the past 4 years. I didn't make it to Duke days, and I was wondering if anyone knows when we will have official orientation? I also am looking for places to live and would love to have some roommates. So if anyone is looking maybe we can Skype or something to get to know each other before the start of classes! Congratulations to all the new admits, I'm so excited to get to know you all!

For any of you who have accepted Duke's offer, have you received any communication from them yet for to do items? Since I deferred from another cohort I'm worried I am missing information! Thanks so much!

I have not received any communication from them yet as well. You're good for now!

Phew - Thank you!
