Duke ABSN Spring 2019

Published

Hello everyone!

I thought I would start a thread for prospective Blue Devils. I would love to hear about each of your backgrounds, professional experience and/or where else you may have applied. Have any of you applied to Duke's ABSN before? This might be a great place to ask questions, share insights and tips for submitting a strong application!

Me: I live in Portland, Oregon. I graduated with a BA in Psychology in 2010. Since then I have worked in domestic violence shelters, mental health crisis centers and in outpatient addiction treatment. I quit my mental health case manager job to pursue nursing almost 2 years ago now! I have been volunteering at a Burn ICU in town. I applied to USFCA in Orange County (safety!) and Johns Hopkins for Fall '18, in which I have been waitlisted. I have an underwhelming undergraduate GPA and a 4.0 in prerequisites. In my applications I've done my best to highlight my professional experience and dedication to under served and under resourced populations. I also submitted a supplemental essay explaining poor undergraduate academic performance. I did notice however that Duke's application portal doesn't have a place to upload supplemental materials. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions about how I could get this essay in front of the admissions committee?

I can't wait to hear about you all! :)

Anyone have their financial aid information posted yet?

I think they are supposed to send an email, but not sure. I don't want to bug them anymore haha.

Got my financial aid letter! No email, just logged into DukeHub. Surprisingly pleased with how much aid I received. Hoping the same for everyone else!

Financial aid posted. Going to Duke Days on the 13th!

Specializes in Oncology/Psych.

Yes, I received my financial aid package. It wasn't as much as I hoped, so I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to attend or not.

My aid was lacking as well, may have to reconsider and likely attend in-state.

I am most likely attending. I received great aid. Otherwise, I was seriosuly considering another school.

Hi Everyone!

My name is Kat and i will be going to Duke for the ABSN Spring 19' program!

1. is anyone doing to Duke Days friday?

2. Does anyone know where ABSN students typically choose to live?

Thanks!!

Hey Kat,

I'm going this Friday to Duke Days!

I'm from California!

As for housing, Duke does not offer on-campus housing for graduate students (ABSN students are considered graduate students for school purposes sake).

There are many affordable living options near campus. Students typically can get their own room for 400-500 or more depending how bougie you want to get. Many students will rent a house and each get a room which can be about 400-500. I saw some ads on Craigslist for 3-4 bedroom houses being rented near campus for $1600.

Google search "Near Duke" it's a housing website for properties near Duke.

Hi everyone! My name is Clair and I was accepted for the Spring 2019 cohort as well! I have already submitted my deposit so I will definitely be attending Duke! I am going to Duke Days on July 13 and am looking for a roommate (or two). About 2 weeks ago I tried to become apart of the housing/subletting facebook page but they have not accepted my request. I have even sent direct messages to both admins of the page, but they also have not responded :(. If anyone has any updated information about facebook housing/roommates pages, etc. please let me know! Thank you!

could you post the link to the housing page on this page?? I wanna try to get in as well! I need to start finding roommates haha

Does anyone know the usual dress code for DD?

I looked at their Flickr account at photos from last year's DD: Flickr

Looks like most everyone is dressed "business casual."
