Duke ABSN Fall 2015

Published

Hi All,

Just wanted to get a thread going for those who are applying to the Fall 2015 ABSN program. What are some of your degrees in? Is anyone applying to other schools? Also, is anyone planning on moving to North Carolina to attend?

@emmysara - don't know if you could provide any insight but I'm wondering what your week looks like, in general? I have young children and will need to figure out child care.. Just trying to get a good idea of whether it should be m-f 8-5 type thing?

Hey all!

Congratulations to all who were accepted! I was accepted too, but wanted to write and let those on the waitlist know I'll be giving up my spot. I know somebody great will take my place :D

Good luck!

Hey all!

When are Duke Days? I am a Spring 2015 cohort member and from my Duke Days experience and orientation, I disliked how they didn't allow us to ask current students questions about the program and life in Durham/DUSON. They only have alumni in the panel, those of which know nothing of the current restructured curriculum so it's only minimally helpful. Depending on when Duke Days are, I'd be happy to meet with any of you. ^_^

For first semester, we have been Monday 8-11:30, full 8-5 Tuesday, and Weds 8-11:30. Depending on which lab group you are, you'll be Weds and Thurs afternoon 1-4, or Thurs and Friday 8A-12P. Add in a clinical placement that could occur on Monday, Weds, Thurs, or Fri to take you til 5PM).

I will be withdrawing my spot at duke. As much as i would love to go, Unc is much cheaper, i cant imagine taking out huge loans. I am going to wait till i see my aid package first tho.

thank you emmysara for your input!

@bluedevilNC- for the senior preceptorship, do we get to choose our specialty, such as ER or OR? as for electives, besides Medical Spanish, what others are there?

When I went there you ranked your top 3. I think most people got their 1st choice and some got their second choice (but ended up being really happy with it). My cohort chose mostly ICUs and ED's. Nobody put surgery but I think PACU was an option. The options change each year.

Are we supposed to receive an acceptance packet in mail?

As for location of nursing school is it close to the other health sciences such as medicine and the university hospital?

Also is there a gym on campus walking distance?

Step outside of DUSON, as you'll regularly hear it referred to as, and you'll see the Duke Medical Pavilion, Duke Clinic, and the Cancer Center. The Children's hospital and other hospital wing are just a block away. The medical school is nestled right behind the Cancer Center and you'll sometimes visit it for their great study rooms and for simulation experiences.

Wilson is the go-to campus gym and is located by the cathedral and basketball stadium, Kville. It's walkable but most students drive and park. If you purchase an on-campus parking permit you can park anywhere on campus with it beginning at 5pm, free of charge. There's a lot right in front of the gym.

Someone previously asked about dorms... There are none available, as this is considered a graduate program. Dorms are for undergrad.

i am seriously considering going to Duke because it has a reputation for producing excellent nursesarrow-10x10.png and turning down MGH because i noticed its ranking plunged from 64 to 110. However, reading about the shooting of UNC students, and being minority (Asian) I'm concerned whether racism still exists around Duke. my high school classmate said that outside of Duke, there could be racism still. Anyone have insights?

I was stationed in Camp Lejeune (Jacksonville, NC) while I was in the Marines. I lived in both Jacksonville and Wilmington and never experienced any racism. I'm Hispanic btw... The shooting you refer to, although sad and unfortunate, is not the norm. Don't get me wrong, downtown Durham like any other city has an inner city and some crime, but in my opinion and experience, it's more dangerous living in San Diego currently then the Triangle area. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks I'll certainly take that into account. It's down to Hopkins and Duke at this point unless I get into a state school or NYU. I'm leaning towards Hopkins but my parents insist that it's way too dangerous there and the good thing about Duke is that it starts during fall.
