DUI in Recovery: Do I self report to PNAP or BON?

Published

I'm new to this website but have found it fascinating. Here is a quick rundown of my story and any advice would be much appreciated...

1st DUI Expunged in 2007

RN licensure obtained in 2011 and currently working in hospital as RN

2nd DUI August 2013

Outpatient rehab completed successfully

AA with sponsor and homegroup- 5 months sober

Drug/Alcohol certified therapist twice a month

NEVER any work-related incidents

Renew license in APril 2015. Do i self report to BON, PNAP???

Do i obtain a lawyer?

I recently applied to a pediatric psych hospital and interview went well but no disclosure yet of DUI, etc.

ANy advice on how i should handle my situation? I'd really appreciate it!!!

Thank you all for your experience, strength, and hope. DUI was probably the best thing ht atcould have happened to me because it got me to AA where i have never been happier. Just don't want this to ruin my career!!!!

does your state have a program for nurses in addition/alcohol issues? If so you're going to have to report sooner or later. A lot of what you are doing will not count due to it being done before you signed a contrat with the board they have their own dr.s rehabs they use and will not accept other sources.

At this point your work will perform a background check- its better for you to self report. Like the above poster said- you'll have to do it eventually. Better to jump than be pushed :). You can do this and you've already taken action. This is just the next step.

It wouldn't hurt to consult with a lawyer. I did- I havnt used one throughout the entire process but it helped me get my head ready for the game.

Read your states relicensure form closely, in Texas you have to disclose. Were you convicted of misdimeaner vs felony. I disclosed my first DUI, and was able to relicense, no monitering. 4 yrs later my 2nd DUI, I was sent to monitoring. I completed IOP before I was convicted the 2nd time, and it did count for TPAPN as did my time with AA. Everything helps as long as its documented. I completed the program early this year and my license is free and clear. I never brought my ETOH abuse to work either, actually had my managers full support thru the process, never lost my job. Be honest, know the rules, call your state BON and ask them anonamously. Good luck

Thank you all so much for your posts. This website is amazing and yesterday I spent probably far too long reading posts from all of you who have and are dealing with recovery issues. I've felt so alone for so long dealing with this and reading posts from all of you has given me hope back. Thanks you!

I wouldnt mention expunged DUI.

Dont mention anything that has been expunged, they wont find out a sealed record is a sealed record.

Get an attorney who specializes in this before self-reporting. If I hadn't self-reported, I wouldn't be in this situation. I had a low level DUI, no drug charges, no drug diversion at work, but *I* knew I was taking opiates (self-medicating for chronic pain syndrome) and got scared. I self-reported and BAM, I'm outta work and in the Voluntary Recovery Program.
