I love nursing and I'd like to practice for a very long time. The thing I've begun to realize, though, is that I only want to work as a nurse part-time (24 hours/week)...and that I'd like to do something completely different 1-2 days per week. I just don't know what that something else is...
How many of you have done/are doing this? What is your other career? Etc...

I work PRN per diem for an agency & PRN as a PPN at the state hospital.
I spread myself too thin & needed a change. I am glad, now I have more time to spend with my family. I am also my husband's secretary- he is a self-employed contractor. I am also a writer. I wrote a published novel inspired by my nursing experiences. I have written a collection of poetry & sci-fi/horror short stories awaiting publication.
I love nursing, but can honestly say- I love being able to do other things also. My life is complete and I have left my mark on the world in so many ways.

I am not a nurse yet but I will be after June 2005. For now I work as a part time hairstylist with hopes of opening my own salon in the near future.

Prior to moving here, I did 24 hrs nursing a week, taught Hapkido 2 nights a week, taught Zen Shiatsu several days a week and saw shiatsu clients in between. Best system I've ever had. It was great.

I just became an insurance agent by taking the state examination and getting my license to sell life, accident, health insurance. I will be selling AFLAC. They work around my nursing schedule.
I also do agency work and will be starting a contract in Joplin next week....will be there 3 days a week.
My goal is to get out of nursing.

I work three 12's a week night shift, so I am also able to run my husband's home office.....sometimes I like to ride along and work with him too...installing directv satellite systems. Quite interesting how many people's homes you go into who are really sick and love to talk to a nurse.

How about you go and get Healing Touch and massage training, practice and become a healing touch practioner/massage therapist one day? Couples VERY nicely w/nursing and you can make your own hours there! I am considering this myself.

I will be double majoring with a degree in art as well as BSN RN. I started off as an art student (hoping to do something with interior design, my lifelong dream). Then as I took more sciences for General Ed courses I realized how I liked them and decided Nursing might be more fulfilling than the pretentious superficial world of interior design that I had been working for (believe me, it is not as fun as it looks on Trading Spaces!)
I finished all my stuff for my art major, went into pre-nursing and now I am just waiting on a clinical space!
Art is a great way to create and unwind. I am sure I will use it well as a nurse!

My sister is a RN and a hairstylist. She says she is not satisfied unless she is doing both.

I left nursing in 1999 after 20 yrs due to a latex allergy and began working for a national ISP providing newsgroup technical support and customer care. I've worked from home till the present time making a salary comparable to what I did as a RN. Plus I was able to work FT from home vs per diem.
I am now thinking of returning to nursing as my old facility is latex free and this job seems to be winding down and my children are old enough for me to venture outside the home.
Along the way I developed web design skills and may use that as well as my technical skills and go back part time. I've not decided as of yet.
I think combining careers is a great way to avoid the burn out that nursing can bring to some folks.
