A student in one of my summer evening classes shows up intoxicated consistently. Any suggestions? Should I just pretend I don't know about it? I mean she even "tops" off her "soda" in class...... I know it's not responsibility to be the morality police, but...

I say report it. I say this because I take school very seriously. I have worked so hard to get where I am at and people like this sicken me. I understand that this person is probably sick but for heavens sake take school seriously. I have the same disrespect for cheaters, and those people who don't do there assignments and miss class and expect to copy your notes. I am young and find myself staying at home and studying while my friends and classmates are living it up. Then they cry when they fail an exam and wonder how in the heck I was "lucky" enough to get an A. I am also working while in school. I am not a stick in the mud, I know how to have fun, but in moderation. I celebrate after the A and not b4 it. If you don't report it someone will either get hurt or the person will eventually fail. Lets just hope they fail b4 it gets to this point. Let us know what happens.

Thanks for all your support and answers. I met with the head of the Nursing program and explained the situation. She said she will deal with the situation and was glad to be aware of it. She agreed that it wasn't approapriate to speak with teacher of that class since it was a substitute teacher-a visiting Doctor.

Thanks again everyone!

haha!

In my opinion report her. The end result of under the influence nursing is a hurt or dead pt. It is hard enough taking care of pt sober, let alone intoxicated. The night before I go to work, I never drink and make sure I get a good nights sleep. I have been a nurse for about a year and mistakes are so easy to make, even sober.

Let us know what happens.....

I don't think I'd change seats.

Stay focused on your studies. You have done all that was necessary. It is out of your hands. It is the schools' problem now.

And don't be surprised if they take 6 months to a year to resolve it. They will most likely watch and document.

There is a big liability issue here for the school. If the student hires a lawyer and sues......

you don't want to find your self in the hot seat as the witness.

Institutions have established guidelines and policies to follow

in this kind of matter. To protect themselves. And they have deep pockets and legal departments.

I would advise you not to tell any one else either. Or you may find yourself tagged as the sentinel event person who identified and named the perpetrator.

Passing thru-thanks for the additional info, I didn't think of that aspect.

I figure since I told the head of the nursing department, my responsibility is done. I didn't move my seating-I'm concentrating on Microbiology-not this student. I only hope I don't see her staggering drunk when class is over because I will intervene (as would anybody) so that she's not getting in her car and driving. Other than that, I don't see how I can do anything else nor do I want to. The last thing I want to do is get dragged into someone's meladrama of their own making....

Thanks for all the wonderful advice and insight. I also appreciate the support.

Good for you, you did the right thing!

I would have emailed an instructor as well, but one intial step........contact the Program Director of the Nursing school and the dean of the program as well...that way you know the if the director tries to cover their tail, you've already placed a bug in the ear of her supervisor. This person needs help and I know it would be best to get the help now before a major incident occurs, like killing someone on the road or putting clients at risk. This makes the program look bad within your community. Good luck to you!!! Let us know how it turns out....

You're welcome dos Amigo's. That is the beauty of this BB. When I have a problem, I put it on here, and hear lots of aspects of it that I hadn't even considered. (from the posters).

Objective points of view are helpful.

I'd steer clear of it all from now on.....

You don't want to place yourself or family members

in someone's line of vindictiveness.

you done your duty..... period...
