I'm doing a care plan based on a case study, and one of the meds listed is Lasix 80 mg PO, o.d.
What does "o.d." mean? I've read that it can mean right (or was that left?) eye, or overdose, but obviously it has something to do with frequency in this case.
Anybody know what it means? Could it be typo for q.d.?
Historically, related to oral meds OD = daily; QOD = every other day
Related to opthalmic (eye) meds O.D = right; O.S. = left eye
Hard to get out of that habit and write daily after 30 years; need to do so because TOO MANY ERRORS occurred, especially when practioners moved from one facility to another with different medication standards.
Yep - and the reason I can remember that is we have friends named Don and Susan. Don is more conservative (right) and Susan is more liberal (left).steph
I was thinking about od means right eye, but the prescrition already had a route to administer, which is PO. The only missing part is the time to administer the drug.
.
Btw, I always remembered the OD for eyedrops as D for dominant (as in eye or handedness). And OS for S for southpaw or left handedness.
just a helpful suggestion for memory.
Funny, I still use my memory trick . . .the husband and wife team of "D"on and "S"usan . . .Don is the right (conservative) and Susan is the left (liberal).
Btw, did I mention that Don and Susan divorced?

o.d. = Once Daily
Often mistaken with QOD "every other day", OD "right eye" = Leading to Oral Medication administered in the eye
However meaning recently changed to = Used Daily
If you look up Lasik, it is a pill, not a liquid. There should even be any mention of eye or anything suggesting near to it. And Lasik is used to treat fluid retention (edema).
and for anybody that says that it is an abbreviation no longer used, please get an update. It is a WIDELY used abbreviation.

QOD is every other day, not every day according to that 'do not use' list.
