Drexel University ACE Spring 2010

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello all,

I just received a letter from saying that my application for the ACE program is now complete and I'm waiting for a response. I was wondering if anyone else here is applying for the same program and received an acceptance letter already?:uhoh3: I'm trying to be patient but I wish I knew how long it will take...

I have the exact same schedule (to Joujoubee)- does anyone know what the wednesday class is (nursing practice)? and why it starts at 6:30 am? Sooooo early! Less than 2 months to go!

That'll be your clinical- you'll alternate every other week with a hospital and with the lab on campus to practice skills.

Did you have any of the instructors? If so, how were they?

thanks.

Hello everyone I finally got my schedule and it is exactly like joujoubee. Has anyone done the FBI fingerprint yet?

AugustRain, I remember reading posts that professors and classes can change closer to the first day of classes so I definitely won't etch anything in stone..I guess I'm just more excited that everything is turning into a reality. Acrawl & blueeyes, my schedule looks exactly like yours! Same professors and all.

I sent out for my American DataBank info a few weeks ago and never received anything back except for the drug screening form.. I am still waiting on my child abuse clearance as well. How long does it take to get that? I actually got one in June for a job and still have it, but I guess they need the most up-to-date and require you to send it back within 2 days. So I'm still waiting and haven't gotten anything done!! I'm getting kind of nervous about getting everything done in time for school to start, but I know there is still some time left... 1.5 months! I am also very excited!

At the start of this quarter I had to change the way I was taking notes. My standard way was with pen and note paper and to write just about everything down. It was highly effective in keeping me focused on the lecture and I would have details down that other people didn't (whenever anyone said "when did we ever learn this" I usually had it in my notes somewhere). This quarter though, the volume and speed of info is so fast that I couldn't keep up with that. I bought a netbook for my birthday, and have been opening powerpoints on the computer and typing my notes on the ppts. The benefit of this is that this quarter, many of the powerpoint slides have notes on them that don't show up when you print the slides (if you look at the slides in normal view, there's a sidebar list of the slides, the active slide, and then below that a white box) and sometimes there is important info there or details that show up on the tests. I don't have to worry about printing and toner and paper because I'm not printing reams and reams of powerpoints. The downside of this method is that I now have the internet in all of my classes, and by the end of an 8 hour lecture day.....I get a lot of farmville in! I also do sometimes miss writing, because I think I do remember things better when I write them.

On a similar vein, I got a flashcard program for my ipod and I take things from the ppts and make ipod flashcards. Again, don't remember as well as when I handwrite, BUT it's much more portable and easy to carry around.

I've also been using http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Evolve-Reach-Comprehensive-Review-for-the-NCLEX-RN-Examination/Hesi/e/9781416047759/ to study with for exams. I have found the Saunder's to be TOO comprehensive and while the detail is great in some ways, it's like having another textbook to read. This I use for the outlines and charts and highlighted key points. I haven't really done much with the questions yet, but it really condenses things down well.

I don't carry my textbooks around with me on a regular basis because I value the health of my back ;) Read discrimatingly- some things are more important than others and if you're not going to be tested on something, it's not the best use of your time to study it. DO watch the videos that come with the books. I actually found them helpful not so much for the skills but also just for a sense of what exactly I was supposed to be doing during clinical.

I struggle with being organized in general so I think overall that's the toughest thing for me. Get a study schedule, do things in a routine manner, and make use of the time on campus outside of class that's built in in the first quarter to really practice health assessment and principles skills. Go to review sessions when you can. Make friends- go out for drinks with everyone after finals ;)

Sorry if this is scattered- I have a post on Q1 here somewhere that I plan to update after this quarter when I have had a chance to reflect and organize my thoughts a little more. Overall the best advice I've gotten on the program is what AugustRain and others have said about being positive- stay upbeat, go in with an open mind, and vent when you need to but don't hold on to negativity. It's definitely possible to have a positive experience in the program even when there will be moments where you hate everything, (yeah midterms, I'm talking about you!). I'm so excited for you guys!

Thx so much for the tips...don't worry I understand completely and it doesn't sound scattered at all. I will definitely take ALL of your advice!

I did. Amer. Databank emailed me a registration ID number and I went on the website to find a list of locations. I needed one that was open on saturdays so I went to this UPS store in Norristown and got it done this past Saturday. I read out the registration ID#, showed him my ID and was out of there in less than 10 minutes.

Did you have any of the instructors? If so, how were they?

thanks.

I had Schmidt-Stein for Genetics, liked her a lot. Didn't have Byrne or Schaffer as professors, but know them from lab, course coordinators, proctoring, etc. Both are approachable and open to answering questions, and Byrne was very helpful before my assessment check out.

Thank you joujoubee I was trying to come to Pennsylvania this weekend so I could get it done and go to the school but I do not know if the snow will allow me. How bad is the weather up there right now? Do you know if they are still canceling flights to and from Pennsylvania?

CocoBelly all I have received as the Drug Screening form and nothing else. I thought it would be back by now but I guess not. Hopefully everything will come soon so we can finish everything early.

Sierra19- you're welcome. The weather over here is not bad at all. We had some snow last night but it was not much.

I think flights are leaving and coming to Philadelphia.

Have you looked into possibly getting the fingerprints done in your state? Maybe American Databank can provide you with a place local.

This might be a stupid question... but where exactly are all of our classes located? Are they all at 15th and Vine? I went to an info session in that building, but didn't know if all the classes were in there or not.

joujoubee- Hey I wanted to get it done down here but on the letter they sent us I thought it said that we had to get it done up there. Also I was coming up there to look at some apartments and visit the school and where I would be for the next year. I will definately look into it though. Thanks
