Drexel ACE Program March 2009

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Just trying to communicate and hopefully get in touch with a few of you. This is a very intense program sure you all know and I'm looking for people who would like to form a study group or at least get to know one another before the start of school.

Is anyone planning on working?

Hope to hear from you!

for some reason I thought Sweat was free with the housing - I didn't realize all students have access to it... awesome~

i want to use the kop one as well i go to la fit now. we should talk to them and see if there is some kind of deal we can make with them to just use the kop on the weekends. i plain on go down the city on a 6am express train so i can hit the gym before class. if anyone else is interested.

Okay, this is probably because I'm so tired that I can hardly see straight, but I really wouldn't count on getting to the gym before class. You might be able to make it work 1st quarter, but after that, you will either still be doing work at 6am, or already at clinical. Definitely important to make time for non-school things, just don't get ahead of yourself and be disappointed if it doesn't work out the way you planned.

I'm a big gym buff but am lucky to get in about 4 hours of workout/week. Unless you can survive on very little sleep, you probably will have to be a weekend warrior.

I dunno, I think having a gym 1 block away from school seems like it could make things easier. But, classes are only 2 days/week half the time, and back to back days.. Plus, that gym has a pool. The pool I (barely) learned how to swim in 2 years ago!

yeah i know that it’s going to be hard i was just having some wishful thinking. so you said that some clinical start at six is this often? also i am trying to put some money aside for books and things how much are books running you guys? i also wanted to know do i have to order the uniform of can i just go get it. and one last thing want to go shopping for some school supplies do think you use more three ring binders or note books? is there a lot of hand outs and things? sorry for all the questions just want to be ready.

You need to order the uniforms (I went to the shop to try stuff on). They embroider the jacket, add patches to stuff, and you need a name pin (which is taking FOREVER to get in). They said it would be about 2 weeks. But, the name pin seems to be holding everything up.

As for uniforms - what Loner said. Books can do some damage to you bank account, but some of them are used for more than one class. I think mine ran about $600 for the 1st quarter...try to buy as little as possible from the bookstore if you can. 3 ring binders seem to be the way to go for most of us, stick with at least 1 1/2 inch. And stock up on printer paper and ink, you'll go through it like crazy. Power points and other info is posted to Blackboard, then you're responsible for printing it out and bringing it to class. Good luck getting ready!

Ive had one clinical that starts at 6 (med/surg). It's rough bc the night before I have to go to the clinical to prep for the next day and my clinical instructor is not the nicest nurse in the world; however, she is very knowledgeable.

FYI, your first quarter some classes will be fairly rediculous, just be patient. Don't buy books for: Nursing informatics , health promotions, and nursing ethics (need book, but don't buy code of ethics), don't buy manual for APA style. For others, buy books at Amazon, BN, etc...

The first class is bogus, the second could be of some benefit but was bogus, and the 3rd just insulted my intelligence much of the time. After 3 weeks of genetics I took in bio 101 at the local CC, Genetics (Nurs 337) was redundant. The two other core classes were good and will prepare you well for assessment skills. You will be running your ass off in about 2 weeks so get as many P/F stupid stuff done ASAP.

Hope this helps!

More or less true. Clinical are a gamble. You could get a clinical about 20 minutes away from your house, or it's one and half hour away, so it REALLY depends. Starting second quarter, there is morning and afternoon clinical, you get the idea.

Uniforms - order them EARLY...though may not make a difference for March entrance, but for September, it may take them up to five weeks to get the things ready (mine did). Also, for shirts get the bottom two pockets, I have a lot of friends who got the top pocket and regretted later on for the lack of space.

If you struggle with math, get Calculate with Confidence, and work through it. If you are good with basic math, then go to the library (I know for a fact Temple has it) and do a couple problems in each chapter. But if you are good with math, it's not worth buying it.

I, uh, didn't crack open the Nursing Ethics book...err...I really didn't think it's necessary. For Health promotions, don't get the book, but you may need the Medical Terminology book, unless you are comfortable with it. Don't get the note cards if you want to save money, I pretty much didn't use mine.

Has anyone gotten their schedule yet? It is posted, minus the lab for Nursing Practice and it actually looks do-able. I am wondering what is missing.....
