Dr. Phil today

Nurses General Nursing

ok, just now i was watching dr. phil interveiw a physician who had an affair with a nurse and he said (as close a paraphrase as i can remember from five minutes ago):

"i've worked in the health care delivery system for a long time and i've seen lots of times nurses playing footsie with doctors because they see it as their ticket out of having to work as a nurse".

ok, i'm not going to even get into all the problems with this statement since they are obvious, i am writing the show right now to explain why this is not an acceptable way to desribe a profession.

who's with me?

I absolutely love the Dr. Phil show and watch it every day I can. While I do find what he said inappropriate (in that he gave the audience a poor description of nurses and their ethics/morals), unfortunately I am sure there are people out there who probably have that mentality.

While I'm not defending what Dr. Phil said, he didn't say this as a generalized statement. He did say he's seen SOME nurses who do this.

I'm not a big Dr. Phil fan, but I think maybe some of you are misinterpreting his statement as a blanket decsription of the nursing profession. It seems like he is merely describing what he has seen. Notice that he says "lots of times", not all the time. We all know that this happens, but it doesn't mean that the majority of nurses want to "hook" a doctor to "elevate their status," nor does it mean that a doctor and a nurse can't have a romantic relationship without this being the motivation.

By the way, that Dr. IS a real piece of crap.

Yeah well-I don't think he said that every nurse was that way....But you all know they are out there-we work with them every day....I can't stand that behavior myself-I work with a couple now that fawn all over the docs...sad thing is they are the ones to get anything they request for the residents....The rest of us just might get blown off and ignored during rounds by a few of the docs.....

Ok, I saw the show today as well and one thing I would like to see that wife of the doctor do is IMMEDIATELY take HIM to the cleaners!!! She is a very beautiful lady and the thought of her spouse going to work day in and day out with this nurse he works with/affairs with etc...would make me sick!! I would turn to the old bank account (joint I assume) and just let him have it, I also would like to know if she has been married for over 10 years to him because if that is so, she can get half of his pension as well! HA! Can't keep your pants up? Well then you better start thinking of it now buddy!! Too many guys get away with things like this and the women are "left to deal with it", I say stand up and grab the thing that makes people want to have affairs with doctors ___THEIR MONEY!!!!!

By the way, this just doesn't go for doctors/nurses....it goes for anyone who has an affair on someone!!!

I saw this show too, and I could not believe what Dr. Phil was saying. He just didn't make this one statement but he also went on to say a few other things stereotypical to nursing, ie. making it seem commonplace for nurses and doctors to be sleeping together and referring to nurses as "cute little nurse," and so on. To me it sounded very much like a blanket statement, and I was really offended by the ignorance of the comments. This show seems to be about nothing more than pitting a poor, innocent doormat wife against a doctor-hungry nurse and the woeful Dr. Busyzipper who can't choose between the two.

I wonder, does Dr. Phil use his own "personal experience" when he makes these generalizations about the relationship between doctors and nurses???

So just tell me where to send the letter.

Should we email or snail mail or both?!!

I can't say as I am miffed at Dr. Phil (even though I don't think he walks on water either). I know a couple girls whose sole purpose for becoming nurses, were so they can meet a doctor and marry them. After the new residents come every year, its like a picnic. It's disgusting. Some of these nurses go through the new residents the way I might go through shampoo. Its not only the doctors who make rounds folks.

On the same token, some doctors just can't keep their pants zipped up. Perhaps Dr. Phil should take a look at the mentality that a lot of doctors have that nurses are there to do as they say, and keep them happy. It's not people like Dr. Phil who perpetuate the stereotype of nurses...its the dimwitted nurses who are in the profession for the wrong reasons who perpetuate the stereotype. Until ALL nurses can take their jobs seriously, and keep their legs closed when the residents roll around...the stereotype will always exist.

Sadly, the majority of us who are in nursing for all the right reasons are not enough to kill the mindset that all nurses are after doctors. A few rotten apples have to spoil the whole cart.

A there are a lot of cheating men but to put down a profession and state that the nurse was 'playing footsie' to get a meal ticket....that is gross... and unprofessional of dr phil...i wonder what his wife did b/4 they were married....glad i didn't watch it

Oh my GOSH!!!

Wheres the address? Actually I guess we can just e-mail the show.

Didn't the OP say that the person said " I've worked in the health care field a long time and have seen.........."

How could Dr Phil have said that? Did he used to work in the health care field?

I just finished watching that show. If I was his wife I would've punched that smirk right off his face - but that is beside the point. I didn't hear that line. Don't know if my dh (who never shuts up when I'm watching a show:chuckle ) was talking and I missed it.

Just re-reading the posts. Is this a series Dr. Phil is doing? Maybe thats why I missed it. The show I watched is the one where dear doc can't decide, and wants both women, and doesn't know what to do about the unborn baby. But if Dr. Phil is making these type statements about nurses, let me know and I'm all set to write and give him a piece of my mind.
