Don't let yourself get sucked in by BM'ers and DG'ers

We had a different teacher come teach for one of our lectures today, she is an amazing women and nurse, super smart, she didn't start working as an actual teacher at our school (she is a CI though) until after we got done with the classes she is teaching. BUMMER because she is such an amazing teacher. Anyway, we got a really crappy EKG class last semester so she came in to refresh us on that today since she is now covering that class. Cardiac ICU is her specialty. She was so engaging and FUNNY, OMG we were crying from laughing to hard. She is very real world and has hilarious stories.

SO ANYWAY! She was giving us tips and advice as new grads, she said to stay away from the BM'ers and DG'ers. (we have them in real life and even on these boards) That is her nick name for "itchers and moaners" (not really itchers but you get the point) and "Doom and Gloomers"

So true, she said for every 5 mins of negativity you are around, it can suck up about an hour of your energy. Just her own theory and observation. But seriously, how true is this?

So to any new students now joining this section, if you want to have a positive experience, STAY AWAY FROM THESE PEOPLE! They seriously will suck the life out of you if you let them. They will make you start focusing on the negative things and all of that. They will drag you down so they have someone to be miserable with. Don't let it happen.

Nursing school is what you make of it. It doesn't have to be a terrible experience that takes all of your time and energy and you are miserable and super stressed for the next few years. Surround yourself with positive people that have a good energy. Allow yourself a few hrs to feel sorry for yourself if something negative comes and then pick yourself up and move on.

Don't be one of those people that only ever has something negative to say.

I mean really, who wants the nick name of a BM'er ;)

Good luck to all the new grads and all the new students!

THANK YOU!!!! I REALLY needed to hear that. :yeah:

:D That is sooo true. I come across people like that at work and life and....read them on this board. Stay away.

Haha! I wish I read this before I started reading the threads! So much BM'ers & DG'ers here you'd think nursing is a job from hell. Thank you for the heads up! I've learned to avoid such people on this thread I'll be sure to remember that when I start my clinicals.

I had to open this thread just to figure out what BM's and DG's were. Now I know. Yeah, its too early in the process to get that bummed out. Hopefully I'll never get there, but this my third and hopefully final career switch.

Oh goodness, so right on. Even some of the nicest people can turn into BMers. Complaining that nursing school isn't all that it could be and different expectations from different clinical instructors oh and dumb questions on the test and mean nurses at the hospital and papers not getting graded in a timely manner. At the end of this term, I will be at the half-way point and I agree, nursing school is absolutely what you make of it. Set goals for yourself. If you find yourself fumbling around or forgetting certain steps, look them up. I was with a detail-oriented nurse the other day who corrected me on a couple of things... I listen and do my best to remember. Nurses and nursing instructors are some of the hardest working and brightest resources you will find but none are perfect in every way.

LOVE THIS!!! It is not only true for school and work, but life in general. Seriously, how many of have BM'ers and DG'ers that we know in our own neighborhoods? lol.

Frankly, I think something I see as an adversity is an opportunity to learn. If everything is handed to me the way that I want it to be, it'd be too easy. :D

Every one of my students vent/gripe from time to time. But do you know what I've noticed? Those that gripe the most/continuously are those that spend most of class texting, daydreaming, talking about partying, and playing on Facebook. They are then shocked when they fail. They never seem to make it far in the program somehow....

I send them out of class so those who work hard can learn. They gripe about this too :) luckily, this group is a SMALL minority of the student population.

LOL I am guilty on a lot of this stuff, like facebook and day dreaming and stuff. I just can't stay focused in class with a lot of the teachers. But I never sit around complaining either and I still do well and well now I am DONE! LOL.

I needed to hear that also. Thank you! :)

I think everyone's mind wanders at times. I just have one or two that never apply themselves. It's sad for two reasons- they are taking up a spot for someone who does want to be a nurse, and shorting themselves out of finding a career they would love.

Yes, I imagine that would be frustrating. Mine is just more an ADD thing, I have to be moving. Doodling, on my phone (touch screen so it doesn't make any noise), something. Yet I retain the stuff and do well, so it hasn't been a problem. Some teachers though are super engaging and that works best for me, so those classes I don't have a hard time in paying attention.
