It's funny how you have exactly 3 posts on this website, all of them slamming Parkland. Are you a nurse? Medical professional? Reporter? What qualifies you to speak how you do other than that ridiculous webpage?

Are you kidding?! That website is such a joke! It looks like it was put together by some teenagers. Movie clips? Haunted houses? Please! I work at Parkland and it's wonderful. We receive the sickest of the sick, mangled of the mangled. The average ER in the area sees 40 patients per day. Parkland sees 400. There will be happy patients and unhappy patients-it comes with the territory. There are issues to be addressed, and they are being aggressive with change at Parkland, but it is in no danger of being shut down. All of the COPC clinics just received critical certifications and the main hospital also just received it's renewal as a Level 1 trauma center. These certification processes are highly detailed and critical. If the place was just a shop of horrors like some claim, they would never pass the rigorous standards they do. There are alot of politics involved, unfortunately. You have to look past some of that and see the good that is being done in the community. You would be lucky to get to work there and see some of the things we see. You will learn so very much. Good luck to you!

How did it go today? What instructors did you meet? I absolutely couldn't stand Mrs. VZ in the first semester but now she's my favorite! Don't feel too overwhelmed. I know after the first day, I was really scared and wanted to quit. It gets better. :) As far as what does everyone wear in lecture, anything you want. By the second or third week, you'll be more comfortable and just wear shorts or sweats and tshirts. We can wear any scrubs for labs and uniform scrubs for clinical days. So have you guys officially started the fall semester? We are finishing up summer 2 and won't start fall until Aug. 27. Did you get your calendars? Was the schedule better or worse than you thought?

It's cold! Bring a jacket or blanket. It's 100 degrees out but we freeze in lecture.

No gum only applies to clinicals. You can have it in class. :)

LOL! I just read the last question about the bridge students. Josh, I'll let you take that one...

2nd semester was harder as far as schedules go. There were 8 clinical days and 4 simulation labs.

It's totally do-able, it just takes dedication. I have 5 children, ages 6-12 and a husband that works full time. If I can do it, anyone can! ;)You'll make some great friends and you'll have this amazing "ah ha" moment when it will all just click.

I think there were only 3 clinical days at the nursing home that first semester.

The only time your schedule will be Mon-Fri will be during your summer 2 semester after your freshman year. I'm sure they want you to block out that much time so you are more flexible to the clinical schedules, but you will not go 5 days a week. Even in the very beginning, you have to do skills checkoffs first and those start in the second week of class. They can't do everyone in one day, so you will get at least one day off.

I'm trying to think of anything else I had to buy at first. A large binder to hold the massive amounts of paperwork, a clipboard when you start clinicals.... They provide almost everything else.

The BON books-they told us we needed to buy the print copy. It's too long to print out yourself and it's referenced in several lectures and tests. This is up to you. I think there are several in our class that didn't buy the actual books and they were fine. E-books can be purchased for Apple products only, they won't work on Kindle's or any other device. This is really annoying and we let the sales rep know it last semester when she came to speak during one of the lectures. Maybe this has changed since February, but I'm not sure.

Yes, you will need your own stethoscope. Any kind will do. BP cuff-it's handy to have your own, especially for the first few weeks, but you don't have to have it. They have several in the lab and you won't be able to take your own BP cuff into clinicals.

Hey guys! I'm a sophomore in the program right now and I can answer some of your questions. It's not a 5 day week, it will change constantly, but Thursdays are always lecture days from 8:30-4:30, Wednesdays are test days, usually only a couple of hours in the morning. Until you start clinicals, Monday or Tuesday will be for skills checkoffs. You will be assigned one of those days, but not both. Friday is usually an "off" day unless you want to go into the lab and practice for the next skills check off. Shoes-any shoe is fine as long as it's not backless or has mesh. It doesn't have to be 100% white or 100% black, but just MOSTLY one of those colors. I don't think anyone has gotten in trouble over shoes. Lab coat-purchase any lab coat you want, as long as it's white. It won't have any logo on it. I've never worn mine, so you might want to wait. The $160 lab kit-it has all of the supplies you'll need for skills check offs practice-IV kit, catheter kit, etc. I can't remember any more of the questions, but let me know if there's anything I can help with. Good luck! :)

Congrats to all the applicants! I look forward to meeting you in the Fall! :) If you haven't received an email yet, don't despair. They are notoriously slow with paperwork. I asked ***** 2 weeks ago if the new applicants had received their letters yet and she said they had just gone out to the Bridge students and they were "working on" the others. I think it's great that you get an email acceptance-that's new from last year when we had to wait on snail mail to get the letter. Good luck everyone!
