Dont feel ready for my new LPN job? Help

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Hello all! I got my LPN license in August. The job im talking about will be my first ever job.

The facility I got a job at, gave me 2 days orientation. Ive been reading on here some people had about 5 days orientation. I wish I had that. I dont feel ready.

I was paired with a LPN thats been working there for years. Im mostly not confident about the treatments (dressings)

This job is an 11-7 shift. It sucks.. im not used to it.. but im going to have to. Ive applied to so many places, they are all asking for experience. So at this point im just taking what I get.

Anyways, Im going to start working this Sunday and Monday night.

My orientation was the 24th and 25th.

What should I do? Im considering asking the LPN if she'd be okay with me coming one more day..

Also those of you who currently work as LPNs, any tips?

Thanks to those who actually read all this.. its long i know, im sorry.

Hi! I realize this answer arrives late. See if there are other nurses for you to go to if you have questions. Another area is the policy procedure manual.

Hang in there, it takes time to adjust and have your time management down. Be good to you. You will make it. Before you know it you will have everything down and wonder what it was like when you began.

Thanks for the input! I hope I can manage

Let us know how it goes!! Good luck!

Realize and accept that you will be slow because you're brand new. Ask questions when you need to ask them.

You will begin to pick up speed as you gain confidence. You'll be great! Good luck!

I hope your facility uses SBAR interact or some other kind of set guide lines for calling doctors otherwise expect to get yelled at. I dont know why facilities hire new grads to do over night checking behind everyone and essentially on there own.

From what I know, they dont have that. =/

I can't believe you only got 2 days. As a new grad I started with my company and got 6 weeks of being paired with another nurse. I had to do 4 weeks of day shift orientation and 2 weeks of nights. I also had to be signed off on task by the nurse I was working with and the sheet had to be filed with the education director before I could work alone. Your story makes me appreciate my facility alot more. Hope your doing well. Hang in there, the experience will make you a good nurse and give you qualifications for your next opportunities. You don't have to stay in one place forever.

I think a lot of nurses don't understand how much of the short end of the training stick LPNs get over their RN counterparts. This is in reference to areas where LPNs generally outnumber their RN counterparts like correctional settings and long term care. I mean, proportionally speaking, do RNs get hosed in orientation equally to that of LPNs? I'm willing to say most RNs get at least a few weeks of orientation while EVERY LPN I graduated with and kept in touch with got... A painful lack of orientation on their first job.

I've heard many seasoned LPNs tell me... "No nurse knew it all the first day... you'll learn as you go... and you either sink or swim!" Good luck, you'll do great!
