Does your work call you at 0530?

I've been working 50 hours a week lately and today was my day off. I stayed up late last night hanging out with my husband. This morning at 0530 my phone started ringing loudly and I thought someone had died or something (I didn't really know what time it was at all). It was work calling to see if I could come in at 0700 because they were short staffed. I said "no, I stayed up very late last night." So then I had trouble getting back to sleep.

They call me ALL the time during my days off, but this was a first. I don't want to just turn off my phone because I'm worried about a real family emergency. I'm thinking of emailing my manager and politely asking her to not ever have me called at that hour.

Like previous posters said #1 - Don't answer or #2 - Get caller ID. If I don't want to work, I don't pick up the phone.

Our dept (ED) calls all hours of the day. We do try to be courteous to our staff. For example if I am calling in extra help at 0800, I don't call the third shifters who might be sleeping.

Just a hazard of the job IMO.

I just LOVED when my NM would call me at 8:00 in the morning on my night off to ask me to come in early that night (at 7 instead of 11). Hmmmmm... you think maybe I was sleeping? Maybe I just won't come in at all tonight! :trout: I'm sure she certainly could have waited until a little more appropriate time to call a third shifter!

I used to have the same problem because I only worked part-time, and my supervisor could NOT get it thru her head that my days off weren't for HER convenience!

It got to be a real hassle - I would pick up occasionally if asked, but that's all. She got really snotty with me one day, and told me, in front of the rest of the staff "It must be nice to only work part-time!" I told her it was - that was the position that I applied for, and if she didn't like the hours she worked, then SHE should go part-time. And it was the absolute last time I ever picked up for HER.:angryfire

I get the same attitude about working part-time. It is frustrating.

I work part-time for a reason. I want to spend time with my kids. I want to have a life.

I do take extra days at times - like I'm on call right now for OB.

But to make a person feel bad about working their schedule is just wrong.

We don't have a phone in our bedroom and I keep a fan on due to my tinnitus. We also have caller id.

Caller ID, phone bells off and a cell phone that only family members and my daughters school have the number to in my bedroom. If a family member calls me when I'm asleep (for a non-emergent reason) they get blocked.

I work nocs and it works.

More like 0500. The supervisors know me well and know when I don't have to work the next day that I don't go to bed until 0400. Just last week I had a very hard time falling asleep and I took an Ambien at 0430 (I know, late to take a sleeping med - I was desperate). Phone rings at 0530 asking me to come in. Told supervisor no, as I just took an Ambien. Caught hell for that. They called me one morning and I did agree to come in - for 10 patients, 5 nurses, charge nurse, a unit secretary, and 3 aides. Oh, and not a single total care pt. Never, ever again.

I've had three different people call me within 2 hours. Guess they didn't understand no the first time. I don't feel that it's worth my time and gas (12 miles one way) to work for reg. time as aides don't get premium pay when it's your day off.

Unfortunately, out in the boonies we can't get caller ID. And we don't get cell phone reception where I live. With my sil pregnant with twins we have to answer the phone in case of emergency. Wonder if I could get call block? :idea:

The staffing coordinator at my place of employment frequently phones me at home at 0500am to ask me if I will cover a shift that starts at 0600am. Nine times out of ten I will tell her "No," simply because I am not a morning person. Also, I like to cherish my days off if I don't need the extra cash that overtime provides.

I worked last night, and they called me today at 1300 to ask about me coming in tonight... um, hello? That's like me calling someone at 1am! Even if I wanted to pick up extra, there's no way I would after someone calling at such an hour when they know I've worked the night before.

Maybe you could just answer and when you realize it's work, say "I'm sorry, she's not here right now." :idea:

I am on a much needed vacation and my DON called today and left a message for me to call when i got home. That was 6 hrs. ago and guess what, I'm still not home. I work lots of OT, but not when I'm on vaction. Other times I just don't answer the phone if I don't want to work and my DON knows that if I don't return her call in 2-3 hrs. I don't want to work
