Does NM REALY pay for nursing school???

Rumor has it that the state of New Mexico actually PAYS for nursing school. So where do I sign up????? Okay, so what I really want to know is is this accurate? Does the state truly pay for it or are there strings attached. If they do, how does it work?

Thanks

In New Mexico, there is the State Lottery Scholarship for tuition, for New Mexico high school graduates only. It pays tuition, not fees, books or dorms. It is not available for the first semester (the bridge scholarship pays that), once you have a semester's GPA of 2.5 or higher, it will pay your undergrad tuition only. Only NM high schoolers qualify.

There is also a loan for service through the NM Comission on Higher Education. They loaned me $20,000 to go to school with and all I have to do is work in an underserved part of the state for 2 years and the loan is completely forgiven. Its a pretty amazing program! If you want more info let me know...

I know that some of the hospitals in Albuquerque will pay you to go to school, but you have to sign up for two years with them after graduation. I didn't realize there was a service loan. I ought to get some information about that.

mollyrn, I would love more info on the program. Is it necessary to be an NM resident for a certain timeframe first? Are there other requirements? Thanks so much

I'm not quite sure how it works but I am a student at Central New Mexico Community College (www.cnm.edu) formerly TVI and once you get into the actual nursing classes you don't pay any tuition. Same is true for CNA classes as well. You still have to pay for books, lab fees, uniform fees, and parking fees but there is no tuition.

okay...to reach the NM commission on higher ed go to http://www.nmche.org or call them at (505) 476-6500. I don't know about having to be a resident of NM or not but in looking over my application (from 2004) I don't see anything about that. I do know that before you can apply you have to be accepted into a NM nursing school though! They want a copy of your acceptance letter to go with your application. Let me know if you have any other questions of if you need any help, I 'm happy to help you!

If you go to the Dept of Labor and ask about a program called WIA (Workforce Investment Act), they will pay up to $7000 for nursing school (usually the last two years of actual nursing classes). Good luck!

I just graduated from CNM/TVi and my total cost without books was about $1300!

Even if they don't pay, it is way cheaper than out East.

I am considering going to NM from PA to complete my RN. Anyone wanna meet me out there ?
