A little off-topic but....

When I was a kid (early 60's) we lived next door to our family doctor's nurse. Mrs. Grattan. OMG. ANYTIME there was something wrong with any one of me or my brothers, my mom was next door asking Mrs. Grattan questions!! She would even send us over to get a boo-boo checked out. We usually came back home with a band-aid on! Remember, this is in the day when the family doctor was indeed the family doctor - I remember many times Dr. Roberts making housecalls and treating me at home when I was sick!

Anyway, I always laugh when I think of how obnoxious my mom must have been to do that to her neighbor who just happened to be the nurse at our doctor's office.

I was asked to give a breast exam on my humungous next door neighbour... :chuckle

I turned red..then mumbled that we "weren't there yet" in my classes.

I still wonder if she was serious but if she wasn't..she sure deadpanned it well. :)

I have this one crazy friend who, even before I had APPLIED to school, called me "doctor" (duh, I'm applying to nrsg) and brought me her troubles, and then got all angered when I said I didn't know. My fave (pg-13 here, kids):

she had a guy "slip" into the wrong, um, area, and it kept bleeding. I was like, okay, when did this happen? TWO YEARS AGO!!! You mean your @$$ has been bleeding intermittently for two years and you haven't gotten worried enough to go to the dr? There is just no help for some people, I guess.

Everyone is starting to ask me questions about things that are wrong with them now that they know I am in nursing school.
I always tell them, "I am sorry you don't feel well..." or, "your foot just fell off, well that sucks, I would go to the Dr..." I am like hello, I am a student who has yet to even do a clinical. Do they think the info just pops in my head after being accepted into nursing school? I sure wish it did, but as we all know it sure don't happen that way!
What are the craziest things people have asked you about since they found out you were in nursing school?

My 58 yo aunt asked me to check out her husband's (62 yo) hemorroid!!!

I was eating when she asked me, I almost puke... :nurse:

Just my 2 pennies....

My aunt is an RN. Her neighbor told her that she slipped and fell in the shower and thinks she broke her foot. So my aunt looked and assessed it. She said "well, it only looks like a sprain to me. Put some ice on it and if it continues to hurt and/or swell, go to the ER". Do you know that her neighbor sued her? She finally went to the ER(after 3 weeks of walking on it), and it turns out it WAS broken and it got infected from not forming right. I mean, c'mon, she didn't go to the ER and get an X-ray, so now she's gonna make my aunt's life h***.

That's why I don't give advice. I mean sure, all probs aren't like that, but if it's something that may need medical attention, I always say "you better go to the ER".

Once again, now that you're in school, a nurse, a doc, med receptionist, or whatever, after people see you in the health care field, they will ask. :)

I am working as a CNA while getting my RN, some of the people I work with call me Doc, they constantly ask me to explain things to them about the medical conditions of them, their relatives, friends, neighbors, associates, everybody and their uncle. One woman shoves her rash in my face and expects me to know exactly what it is. I told her to go to a dermatologist. I always tell them that I am not a doctor and that they should go to the ER or their PCP.

I'm an ER RN as well as a pre-hospital provider on our rural EMS squad. I have neighbors that call my house to see if they should activate 911???!!!!! One guy called because our other neighbor was having chest pain! And then he wanted to chit chat on the phone besides!!! People - I have learned never to doubt anything anyone says.

I have been asked a lot of questions since becoming a nursing student. I have taken blood pressures and pulses. I've never dispensed much advice, though, except that a Tylenol might be helpful and a trip to the doctor. I'm too scared I'll damage someone for life!:rotfl:
