Does every hospital or skilled nursing facility deal with a lot of drama and tension

Published

I am a CNA working the evening shift 3-11 in a skilled nursing facility. What I have noticed in the past year of being in the nursing field that there is a lot of crap to put up with. That includes dealing with other people on other shifts. It seems like all the other shifts seem to moan and complain about the other shifts. Especially the 7-3 shift. They always complain about the 3-11 and 11-7 shift. Daylight thinks and they do everything at my facility and said stuff about the other 2 shifts that were lazy, we don't know how to report anything, and that we don't do anything while we are at work. The thing that daylight doesn't understand is that the 3-11 and even night shift do not have time to get everything they want done the CNAs and nurses. We tell it to them and they say they understand but when were gone they talk crap about us. all the shifts complain about one another but the daylight seems to moan about all of us and talk crap when were not there when we all try do our best to get stuff done. They Aides complain when there are not enough people dressed for them from 11-7 even though at my facility it is not even our job to get people dressed. It just causes a lot of drama and tension. Does this go on at hospitals and other long term care homes.

It goes on everywhere. Especially when there's not a whole lot of staff and lots of residents.

I think that a CNA's job is one of the toughest around, and can be backbreaking. Nurses in LTC and skilled care do a ton by themselves. And all of the moaning and groaning and this one doesn't do what they are supposed to doesn't get a resident up and dressed or medicated any quicker.

I think that LT or skilled care needs a team approach. It is a heck of a lot easier to have 2 CNA's working together. But much like the climate of acute care, bring your superhero cape, cause you are gonna need it. Ratios are outlandish and overwhelming.

You can only do what you can. Otherwise, let em talk. Don't feel guilty because the hall is not up and dressed by 645 am. You can only work one resident at a time.

I thinks it's worse in LTC because the environment doesn't constantly change, so it's easy for people to get particular and stuck in their (dysfunctional) ways. It just leads to problems...

No. It's time to put some serious work into team building, and I don't mean a few pizza parties. This can be done, but it will take time and willingness from all parties to get over it, and work to maintain it. It's like a marriage.

It always seems like the evening shift always gets dumped on. For example my other co worker got a resident up to the restroom about 10 o clock before night shift came on and she was perfectly fine in bed. the next day daylight came on and apparently the resident got chocolate covered pretzels on her water pitcher and spilled the water pitcher on the floor and was underneath the bed. we come on at 3 and of course the daylight aides are pointing fingers at us thinking that we left the room like that when we left. 11-7 comes in after us and it acutally happened on their shift about a half hour before the daytime people came on cause the aide that worked that night got that resident up to the bath room was about 6:30 then put her back into bed. I just don't see why the 7-3 shift always picks on us and say we are ridiculous when some things acutally go on during night tern.

Specializes in ER.

Ah, the shift wars. Yes, every shift gets dumped on. I've even heard staff complain about the previous shift in front of patients and families.

Your shift is the only hardworking one, the others are slackers and leave you all the work. No one in management cares no matter how much you complain ;)

It does not really help cause our ADON agrees with daylight. Its like daylight thinks they do everything perfectly they don't do anything wrong make mistakes or forget anything. They talk a lot of crap on my shift 3-11. We are the shift that never does anything right or pay any attention to anything. They act so nice to our faces but when we are not there they say how ridiculous we all are just because one aide make a mistake of not setting a bed alarm or one aide on another hall way is lazy. 3-11 always gets dumped on for some reason despite I will say some nursing assistants for some reason are not that motivated on our shift.

I have been a CNA for almost 3 years now, and after the first two nights at my first LTC care (11-7) position, I could then, and am now, yelling YES! The drama issue is quite annoying, to be honest. I left a career as a public school science teacher, and at times, it feels as if I am working with my teenage students again.

I wish they would realize that no shift is better than the other shift. Yes we have some lazy people and sometimes we don't do everything we cant do. I know my evening nurse complains about stuff that daylight left over that they should have stayed to finish. I know 3-11 and 11-7 don't leave until they finish all their stuff. Day light always moans and groans and talks crap on the rest of us. More on 3-11 but they need to stop being so quick to criticize the rest of us and stop saying that we don't do anything right since were the shift that are not expected to do anything right. I think they should try to and say how good of a job we do some times instead of talking how ridiculous we all are not to say that 3-11 and 11-7 don't complain but daylight seems to rant about stuff all the time. they say they do majority if not everything around hear while the rest of us don't work like they do. CNAs just don't have time to do extra stuff like wrap silverware for the daytime shift to serve breakfast. They silverware is not always wrapped either.

Anyone else agree with me in saying that no one is ridiculous or no shift is ridiculous.

Anyone else agree with me in saying that no one is ridiculous or no shift is ridiculous.

Of course not. There are plenty of ridiculous people in the world, and occasionally, there is an aggregate of them on one shift. This statement is, actually, ridiculous. "No one" is ridiculous? Surely you jest.

Nursing is a 24 hour job. People have got to realize and deal with the fact there are things left undone sometimes. No shift is better than the other one or two shifts. People just need to understand. Every shift has its plus and minuses. 7-3 shifts is the busiest shift for aides and nurses but therapy and private services also take patients/residents off the floor and they go to activities all day where they are not at their call bell. Some people of 7-3 leave things behind that they should not be leaving behind for 3-11 to do. Im just saying that no one at work is ridiculous. I say again that every shift has its plus and minuses. everyone works differently and yes you have people who do not work apart of a team and yes some unfortunately don't care and people forget to do things. Talking crap on another shift saying they never listen, don't do anything right, that whole shift is lazy just because one nurse or aide is not motivated or just saying we are ridiculous is not going to solve anything or going to get any work done faster.
