Does every hospital or skilled nursing facility deal with a lot of drama and tension

Published

I am a CNA working the evening shift 3-11 in a skilled nursing facility. What I have noticed in the past year of being in the nursing field that there is a lot of crap to put up with. That includes dealing with other people on other shifts. It seems like all the other shifts seem to moan and complain about the other shifts. Especially the 7-3 shift. They always complain about the 3-11 and 11-7 shift. Daylight thinks and they do everything at my facility and said stuff about the other 2 shifts that were lazy, we don't know how to report anything, and that we don't do anything while we are at work. The thing that daylight doesn't understand is that the 3-11 and even night shift do not have time to get everything they want done the CNAs and nurses. We tell it to them and they say they understand but when were gone they talk crap about us. all the shifts complain about one another but the daylight seems to moan about all of us and talk crap when were not there when we all try do our best to get stuff done. They Aides complain when there are not enough people dressed for them from 11-7 even though at my facility it is not even our job to get people dressed. It just causes a lot of drama and tension. Does this go on at hospitals and other long term care homes.

Blame management.

If you are dealing with drama and tension between shifts it is because management is not skilled at building team across the continuum and then settles for bad behavior.

If it was all to be done between 7-3, then there would only be that one shift!

Happens everywhere! I've seen more nurses and CNA's spend more time complaining about how much they have to do and how much the other shifts don't do, than you can shake a stick at! And in the end it would all get done in a timely, competent manner if the would just shut up and do the bloody work!

Yep, you got it. LTC seems to spawn drama. Grown women who can't seem to work out their differences. Embarrassing.

Let's be honest, we all know that there's a double standard for certain things when it comes to day vs. night shift.

If day shift leaves unfinished work for nights, it's because they had a busy day and the night nurse should just keep his mouth shut and be understanding.

But when nights leaves anything unfinished for days, it's the end of the world and the day shift nurse is justified in having some sort of emotional breakdown and go crying (as in literal tears) to the manager.

When we have a resident in the hospital who was a third shift get-up, we (nights) are expected to get someone else up for days in their place. Um... Why?

Such double standards are deeply embedded in the culture of many LTC facilities. So deeply embedded that it's taken for granted.

Unfortunately I do not think it will ever go away. One thing is just because one aide or nurse did not do something right or lazy does not mean oh well 3-11 or 11-7 or 7-3 was lazy. Don't judge the entire shift which 7-3 constantly do to 3-11. they always talk crap and tear our shift apart all the time when we are not there. When we do come on they act all nice and friendly with us. When we are not there they talk about how we are too ridiculous just because a nurse forgot a urine sample in a residents bathroom or and aide forgot to set the tables. They are so quick to criticize us when something happens. the cnas on 7-3 most of the time work full staffed all the time while for 3 months the aides on 3-11 work with 4 aides every day. Night shift has recently been working with 2 aides a lot. daylight never gets to work short staffed like the other two shifts do. The thing is some staff members do not do everything perfectly either. We always find our residents soaked and no one was ever toileted on daylights last rounds. there tables are not cleaned off or have silverware for us sometimes at dinner. Like I said no shift is any better than the next shift or the one after that.

No mater what though management always sides with the 7-3 shift on everything. It really makes them look better and superior to the other two shifts and its not true
