i've been doing some thinking (well i'm bored too---just graduated and overstudying for the NCLEX). i am staying at my current job once i pass the boards... but i'm just thinking about the holidays coming up and the whopper of student loans i have to pay back.... i want a 2nd job.

i work mon-fri 7am to 4pm. i thought about doing a few shifts @ the fire dept, but i want something just kind of easygoing.... so i wanna get a job at the mall, just seasonal for the holidays, making extra cash on the weekends. im thinking maybe abercrombie or sephora. seriously.

does anyone else have a 2nd casual non-nursing job??

I'll just point out that if you don't get REAL rest and recreation, you'll be a basket case right quick!

My dad always worked two or three jobs. I've done the same over the years. So has my wife, occasionally. I still say that especially now, right after school, you need some time to breathe. I'm a big believer in time off, unless you're in genuine dire straits financially. During school you probably forgot how to have a life.

Go take a hike! Or jump in the lake!

thanks for your advice. i think i already AM a basket case, lol! the jerk in financial aide made an error and checked "begin payment immediately" after graduation and the loan bills are flooding in, two weeks after graduation. my bf and i are trying to move next year and saving up money for that too. i just feel like i need to do something else for grocery and gas money so we can have some kind of a christmas.

i think one saturday night a month at the mall wouldn't be so bad.... it might be fun actually to get out of the healthcare setting and i could get a discount on christmas gifts! :)

No second job--but feels like it since I do 1-2 double shifts a week.

I'd suggest relaxation first but if needed, why not try the gift-wrapping area of a store in the mall? I think that would be enjoyable.

I hope your BF isn't expecting any gifts from Sephora. lol

I have been having those same thougts. Those darn student loans. I want to return to school early next year but want to start paying them off real soon even though I am not due to start paying until April. I just started my job but have really been thinking about doing home care one day a week or something that I can do from home. I was an insurance rep once so I know coding and stuff. I would love to find a stay at home job doing that one day a week.

If you want to get a 2nd job for the holidays, why not try a place like Macy's or Target? A large store with lots of different sections that you can maximize the employee discount.

those are great ideas.... thank you! i didn't even think to look at a dept store but there is a hudson belk's rightdown the street which might be something to look into..... i'm sure they could use seasonal help! :)

If you need the cash, go work for $8.00 an hour at Penny's or Sears for the holidays. If not, volunteer at the Humane Society or join Civil Air Patrol. I just joined CAP as the medical officer for my area's squadron, and will get the chance to fly occ. also. Plus survival school is in a few weeks (do I get to bring my motorhome? :D ) The cadets are fun to work with, too!

I picked up 1 weekend a month at a LTC as a charge RN It was in a different facility I grossed $400. per Paycheck. I did that for almost a year. But now I just pick up extra hours where i work because then i get time and half. more cost effective for my time.

I wouldn't suggest Target. I used to work there in Alabama. You have about 15 managers, holidays are nuts, you only get a 10% discount, and you have to stay there until the store is perfect for opening, even if it's 5 am. I would work for a company like the Gap, which also owns Banana Republic and several other retail stores.

my thought is why work a 2nd job making 1/2 what you could make at the hosp and pick up a PRN nursnig job...3 nurses in our hosp just went to work for an eye surgeon assisting in lasix and they are making 10 bucks more an hour!!!--they said the work is tediouse and dreadful and the guy is a jerk..but its only part time.

Also I started working part time doing blood draws and flu shots/vacinations for the health dept--its only a couple of hours a few times a week but for 22.00 an hour it is a better pay check I could get from the mall.
