Does anyone love their job?

Nurses General Nursing

I have heard so many stories about how hard nursing is and all there is to complain about, but does anyone enjoy their work? Please let's hear from someone who is glad they got into nursing and wouldn't change their choice for anything.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE what I do.

The ICU rocks!!!! :)

I love nursing. IF we could just do what we love without all the extra baggage that our "jobs" require, you probably wouldn't ever hear complaints. This board is a really good place to vent, fuss, cry, whine, and moan to. We can do so anonymously without fear of retribution. We all have the same problems, just different faces attached to them.

Hi! I love nursing or at least I would if we were allowed to have a managable load of patients along with enough CNA's to where we would be able to do nursing like it should be done. At least like most nurses see that it should be done. This would be as follows....Get to work in the morning, get report, go around and check on all the patients (all 5 or 6 of them) and greet them warmly, assess them and like you really want to be there....hahaha:chuckle! Go back to the med room (which by the way was plenty large enough for everyone to fit in comfortably...) After you pull all of your meds you would take them to each patient in a calm and relaxed manner, then sit down and get charts open and up to date. In the meantime you would have enough time and staff to handle all the little problems that come up in the morning including sending pts for testing etc. This would be the pattern for the whole day. This includes having the time to make sure charts are up to date and closed when the next shift comes in for report. This of course would only work for Med/Surg floors and not the ICU's etc but I think there would be a level that would match the critical care floors as well. Mainly I guess I am getting at adequate staffing, safe patient/nurse ratios, management that supported nursing, adequate pay and days off and more flexible scheduling. Did I cover it all?????:nurse: :roll I know this isn't possible but it sure would be nice to at least get closer to this "ideal" of nursing. I know there is a happy medium somewhere. If all the hospitals were non-profit and weren't interested in constantly competing with all the other facilities in the area it would be better. I say all of this to say this: I love being a nurse but know that because of my age and physical condition I won't be able to retire because of all these things I have mentioned in reverse...eg; high nurse patient ratio, not enough support staff (CNA's, etc.) and all the other things that go along with that. I hope this doesn't sound like I am being too unrealistic. I really think there is a way to do it the right way but I know that it will never happen! Have a great Thanksgiving!

I have this. It is entirely possible and the norm in some areas. I work neuroscience in Kansas City.

I LOVE my job. I work in a small ED.

I think it is so normal to complain/vent about our jobs. Nursing is hard. REALLY hard. We deal with so much crap.:imbar literally! Yesterday I had a pt come in with a plugged cath after prostate surgery. Poor guy hadn't pee'd for 12 hours! But before we could unplug him we needed him in a gown. When the pant's came off we realized he was inc of bowel...Biggest mess I had ever seen in the ER:uhoh21: got him cleaned up and unplugged and he was the most grateful soul on the planet! Did that stop me from venting a bit in the breakroom? (I think that the daughter knew he was incontinent and brought him in this way) Like I said, didn't stop my venting...But I would go back and do it again in a heartbeat. (note to self...always assume the worst and wear gloves for new pt's:p first "de-gowning")

I love my job and my only prayer is that I never hurt someone.

I LOVE my job. I work in a small ED.

Love the work and the patients. :balloons: Hate the administrators and the bullies. :angryfire

I wouldn't do it again if I could do it all over.

Love is a strong word.

I love nursing, but I do not always love my job.

yeah, i love my job, too - there's not too much else out there where there is so much variety of nursing available, even within specialties. sure, there are some parts of it that are not entirely enjoyable, but i love being at work.

:balloons: Been a nurse for over 20 years and love it, would also do it again. In school now (again) for FNP or CRNA. Finally went back for the master degree (does that say anything!)

Specializes in OB, ortho/neuro, home care, office.

I also love my job, I tell my patients that all the time when they tell me how good I've been to them and thank me for what I've done. I simply say, I love my job, and I love taking care of my patients :) Wouldn't change it for the world!

I love my work AND my job. I work the med floor in a relatively small hospital. Sure, there are shifts where we aren't as well staffed as usual; but that is usually rectified by the next shift. It is VERY rare for me to feel like I don't have enough time to do a good job. I have never had to take care of over four patients. 3-4 is the usual for me. This is night shift. I love my director, and I think she does a great job. Most days she comes to work in scrubs--and if day shift is running behind, she'll come out and pass meds or do admits or whatever else she can.

Before i worked here I worked for several years at an independent birthing center. I LOVED IT! But it wasn't very flexible in terms of hours, and since I'm going back to school, I decided to go back to the hospital for now. I imagine I will end up at the birth center again at some point, though!

Anyhow, there you have it. There are some of us who do love our jobs AND our work.

Specializes in Geriatrics, Cardiac, ICU.

This is all good to know. I know I will love my work as a nurse. As it stands now, I am a CNA and I like the work it's the short staff and the administrators I don't like so I can see what you all mean. I work 3rd shift most of the time just to avoid them!

I adore nursing, love to assess my pt find something and report to MD,then treat it,I love to rub backs,I love it when the pt tells me I am the best,I love to look at my pt's at the end of the day and see that I did make a difference even if it is a very small difference. I am not the management type, but boy,I do love to care for others!!!!!
