Does anyone enjoy nursing?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum but I have been reading posts on this website for over a year now.

My question is does anyone enjoy nursing anymore? Some post are pretty negative about the career. I am 25 year old mother of two very young kids, 2 and 3 years old. I am going to school and recently decided to sign up to start LPN training in the summer. I wish to go all the way to get my ADN pretty much without a break inbetween. Somedays I am very hopeful that this will be a great career for me to get into but then I read a bunch of post about nursing and I start to question my career choice. I'm just wondering if its worth putting my family through the rigorious routine that I will have to follow once I start the LPN training. Any feedback, good or bad would be greatly apprectiated. Thank you.

You must understand that we come her to vent after a bad shift, a manager that just doesn't get it or for many other reason anyone complains LOL.. With that said, I do enjoy my job.. I have many good days and love love love my co-workers.. Of course I have bad shifts or runs that never seem to end but it all works out :)

It is not all rainbows and butterflies and the job is very stressful dealing with pts, families, MD's that just done get it but that's part of the joy of it too..

We as nurses have and I think we have to have a twisted sense of humor to do it everyday.. No one can tell you if you will enjoy it or not; many do and just as many don't.

Yes, that!

I just wanted to make the point that it's not wise to put a lot of credence in the venting and ranting posts. Nursing is challenging and hard, and it's the best job I've ever had, and it's a great career. Is it always beautiful? No ma'am. Sometimes I HATE the garbage that comes with being a professional nurse. Venting here among people who understand is sometimes the only thing that saves my sanity. And then I get to go back the next day and have a completely different experience. It's exhilerating, frustrating, challenging, fun, ugly, beautiful... all of those things.

Nursing is very personally fulfilling for me, and no doubt countless others. I hope the same is true for you.

I wish you much luck and success in your education and your career.

I do enjoy my job, but as previously posted there are days when my job makes me second guess my career choice. When I have bad shifts it has to do with my patients (some patients are very difficult to be around), my co-workers (some co-workers can leave lots of stuff undone that then becomes my responsibility along with my normal shift duties), my mood for that particular day, and shift change admissions (this really irrates me- it throws my whole shift through a loop). Most days I like my job and this is because of ME - not because of anyone else other than myself, I acknowledge that I am in control of my attitude and my feelings regarding what I choose to do career wise, I also know that if I start to go to work dreading my shift then it's up to me to make the change. Nursing is not for everyone (even though it seems that there's an overal attitude that anyone can be a nurse), it is a hard job - especially bedside nursing, many times nursing is a thankless job, and there is an endless amount of politics involved with the nursing career, but I know that I picked the right career and I look forward to what my career future holds for me. My career choices are endless and I have no desire (unlike most of my co-workers) to stay in the job I am in for my whole career. Good luck with whatever you choose to do and make sure you are doing it because you want to do this as a career not because of the money (trust me the pay is not as great as the public thinks it is), the availibility of always getting a job (again, the publics perception is very skewed on this, there is no shortage of nurses right now, finding a job is more difficult than what many new grad nurses expect), or because of how nursing is glorified on TV shows (nursing is nothing like what it is portrayed by the media to the general public).

I love it! I love my coworkers, I love my job, I am lukewarm in my love of my administration but they are better than most places that I hear about. I feel like our staffing is great 95% of the time.

My experience is not everyone's experience, I know.

Depends on where you work, and who you work with........

yeah, i enjoy nursing. i'm a second career nurse, so i know what the "real" job market is like and what those jobs are like (most are worse than nursing). nursing is easy, in good demand (if u have exp), pays good and the work environment is great (i basically get to wear pj's to work).

Honestly, in all my years of Nursing, I can only recall one Nurse who loved their job.....Not trying to be negative, just what I've seen. :twocents:

I love it. I'll be getting out in a few years though. I'll miss it. But I can't do this until I'm 70 and can retire.

I love nursing and all the possibilities! I went back for my BSN after working in retail mgmt, then later, hotel mgmt. I ended up getting burned out and hating my hotel job. So I switched to nursing. Realistically, every line of work will have ups and downs. At least with nursing, you can quit one area and eventually move to another when you are tired. Not so with many other professions. Remember, people come here to vent most of the time. At least we have a place to do that.

Yes I love what I do. It does however take a lot of hard work and dedication. I spend quite a bit of time off the clock constantly educating myself and keeping up with current research, standards and guidelines. I would not be happy any other way.

Thanks everyone to posted comments. I guess I should stop reading the "vent" posts lol

I thing the vent posts give you a reality check with nursing so please keep reading them. Remember that when people write these they are probably very angry and frustrated. And every job has its good and bad days.

Nursing is a hard slog, and nursing and studying for me was even harder and exhausting. Why don't you wait till your kids are a little older and a bit more independent b4 going into nursing? Or you could do a year and see how you go. You won't know till u do the job what it is really like though, that is the thing.

I think nursing gets harder as you get older, so if you are still young, do it then. I myself would not encourage a young person in the main to get nursing as a first degree, I would say get experience in other things first - or get a first degree in something else - then try nursing. Always have something to fall back on, I reckon. Because if you end up hating nursing, then you are stuck.
