I just watched this documentary called "The Bridge" - it was SO sad! Basically its a true life documentary that was fimed at the Golden Gate Bridge...they filmed continously for a year and caught quite a few people that were committing suicide by jumping off the bridge and then interviewed their family members.
There is also the account from survivor who jumped of the GG bridge. It was a haunting documentary to say the least...it was just really sad. I don't know if I would be able to film that and live with myself afterwards . I included the link from Google Video.

I saw it too (I love Netflix-they have the BEST indies and documentaries ) Weren't the cameras set up and left to record like security cameras? I believe the next of kin had to sign a release and they all seemed very willing to talk about their loved ones. What tortured people they were-I can almost understand suicide but man oh man---Why not go the most painLESS way you can? I can't imagine jumping...That takes guts (or something)
I read online that they did in fact prevent 6 people I believe from jumping and if they saw someone they could stop in time they would. Most of the people they couldnt really tell because they would just look like a normal tourist looking out at the water, etc then all of a sudden they would jump over and they wouldnt have enough time to save them.
ok thats good to know! watching it now. thanks

I was recently at a conference where a mental health provider referred to SF as the "suicide capital of the world."
They have their hands full with all of those people coming there to jump off the bridge.
Never realized before what they dealt with.

watched it tonite and my heart broke in two. For all those left behind, for those poor tortured souls jumping, and for those who survived. The boy and his father who were talking made me cry, this young man is only 24, and his life is so altered and way off course for normality. The image of the man in black walking the bridge before jumping, he was so so in agony with his life, that will never leave my head.

Whoa... that was crazy. I never thought of people jumping off the golden gate bridge. That would be an okay way to go if you were gonna end it. It would be a pretty view, it's fun to free fall, (at least when you know there is a cord attached to you and a big air mattress to catch you if that breaks) and you more than likely will get the job intended done the first time. I found it a little shocking/interesting that some of the families/friends claimed they just knew their loved one was leaving to go do it. Unbelievable. It really strikes a chord with me when people make insensitive comments about mental health issues. ie... get over it, don't be selfish, don't blame an illness for the mother who killed her kids... IMO anyone who has the ability to carry out such a hideous crime is definitely not well in any way shape or form. They aren't just angry, tired, bored, or having a bad day. They are mentally ill. I L L, ill. Okay, off my soapbox now. Thanks for sharing the documentary with us!

I haven't seen the film. But I have been to the Golden Gate Bridge numerous times, both on foot and driving over it.. I find it hard to believe that people could jump off of it as freely as some seem to be describing here. I also finding it amazing that love ones would say what some have ascribed to them. Most families are either too over come with grief and a sense of failure. Or the remainder are too angry with their dead loved one. I'll see if I can find a copy of it.

I just watched this documentary and It is absolutely heartbreaking. I cannot even think about the thought of committing suicide without shuddering, yet these people do it with ease. Its heartbreaking that people can reach that low of a low that NOTHING can help them. Even those who have everything they could possibly want, have this emptiness inside of them that only death can fill. Its unbelievable and a real wonder. It can happen to anyone. The most mentally stable person can one day change and nothing can stop them. Its really scary.
