Hi !!
I used to live in the bay area and moved to Las Vegas about 3 years ago. Big mistake. The 110 degrees in the summer kinda hurt. I plan on attending a nursing school named Apollo College. It's a great school but the costs of the RN program hurts a little.....$43,700. No waiting list and I'm done in 22 months. Thats with all the prereqs, nursing concepts and clinicals. What I want to do is take the program and moved back to the bay area. I don't care if rent is expensive. I miss seeing water and the different kinds of people. The bay area is the best. If you know of any hospitals that may pay off my loan, please post it here.
THanks

My experience is that hospitals often reimburse your ongoing education, also if you're in a specialty that's in demand you may be able to negotiate a sign on bonus that could be used towards the loan.
There are a couple of Federal programs that pay off part of your loans. Here's a link to the Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program, http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/nursing/loanrepay.htm I believe there are others. The catch with these is you have to be agree to work in an underserved area for two years, I doubt the Bay Area qualifies (I'm in San Jose) but maybe something on the North Coast that'll at least get you closer to the ocean. Good luck!

Im doing some traveling out in san diego right now and was shocked to find out there is a waiting list to get into school. I grew up in NY and you can get right into school. ALSO over 40K for school... mamma mia.. My damage=16,000 for a bachelors degree! And any hospital there will pay for your tuition as long as you work for them for 2 years... Just wanted to share how the other side of the country lives :)

That's really weird! That is the same school I started my nursing education at but Apollo college of New Mexico.....But due to certain situations I moved back to cali and am finishing at a community college. Some words of advice I recommend not dealing with their finical aid office they have NO great advice and are only out to get their money. They only want you to use their preferred lenders and got very angry with me when I wanted to use my own lender. I know it sounds nice to get all your pre reqs done there but i would take them at a local community college so u can guaranty they will transfer especially if you ever want to continue your education. Even if they tell you they will I would make sure by calling a local university and see what they say.
Also, Call California Board of Registered nurses to see when you graduate from Apollo you will be able to be licensed here.
And to answer your question I know some hospitals like John Muir, Sutter Coast in N.Cali and some Kaisers will pay off loans but it is often up to a certain amount. Usually 15,000-25,000 and you have to commit YEARS for them to do that. Your best bet is to call the hospitals and ask.

If you're interested in moving to New Orleans and working here for 3 years I may be able to help you.

The VA has a program called Education Debt Reduction Program. They will pay up to $45,000 in education loan repayments for new grads. They will reimburse for educational loans that is directly related to nursing school expense. I think they pay up to $9,000/year up to 5 years. There is no time commitment. So if you leave after two years, you will have about $18,000 paid off.

You may want to consider the Army Reserves. I work with a nurse who is paying off students loans with Reserve duty and she has never been deployed, tho she came close once. She's already a Major.

Just wanted to add about the HRSA programs(either the loan repayment or full scholarship for school)---you do have a 2 year payback requirement in an "underserved" area but currently that counts as pretty much any hospital, anywhere.
I got my ABSN on a HRSA scholarship and immediately moved back to the Bay Area. I called my program manager to find out exactly where I was "allowed" to work. She basically said there were too many to give me and could I tell her some places I was looking at. Anyway, evrything was on the list--Kaiser, Childrens's, Stanford, UCSF, etc. Every major hospital in the bay area was allowed. I just finished my two years at a Sutter facility. BTW, the hiring facility knows nothing about your HRSA status so you're same pay/benes as anyone else. Two completely different things.
So, PS, don't let that "underserved" thing throw ya and think you have to move out to the sticks---unless that's your thing :)

While alot of hospitals are "underserved" as of Oct 1st the hospital that you work in needs to be non-profit one if I am reading it right.
And ironically (depending on your viewpoint anyway), turns out Kaiser, Sutter, CHW etc., all still qualify as they are technically non-profit.
Crazy...
I did not know that Kiaser was, and not sure where Sutter is located. I know that CHW is I worked for them and then they sold our hospital to Daughters of Charity another non-profit hosp. Thanks for the info.....
