Nursing is not an easy career path to choose. It is certainly one of the most difficult. When friends or prospective students ask, do you recommend becoming a nurse?:)

Specializes in Med/surg, OB, L&D, psych, ED, etc.

I think nursing is abusive profession and would not recommend it to anyone. I think that making it be about the person is an injustice. NO ONE should have to deal with the abuses that are inherent in being a nurse.

I wouldn't discourage anyone.

You may think someone doesn't have what it takes, but, in the end, they may end up being awesome... you just don't know.

Everybody deserves a chance to TRY.

I voted "yes" but I agree with the others that are saying it does depend on a person's heart and motives. If someone was truly willing to put the effort and work into becoming a nurse, I would do what I could to encourage them.

Do you think perhaps a nurse may not like his or her job is because the environment that is set up by those in leadership....... create an environment that is begging you to make a mistake and put your livelyhood and the very patient's life at risk? How, when those in charge are in it for profit only...... and every decision they make is based on the bottom line, ........ do you expect the nurses and the patients to have all the tools they need to do their jobs in a safe and professional manner. The lack of care I have witnessed in my carrer due to the greed of those in charge is disgusting. Then there is the fraud that runs rampent in the system. For example; Medicare WILL NOT PAY the institution if the a patient, for example, needs a respiratory treatment, unless the patient is monitored for the ENTIRE duration of the treatment.I worked in an institution that had one Respiratory Therapist working 4 floors. Each floor had 5 to 6 patients who need repiratory treatments. How in the world is one person going to monitor each and every patient ( in this case 24 people) for the entire duration of the treatment? Well, they cannot because it is impossible. However, the paperwork states that each and every patitent was monitored during the ENTIRE duration of the treatment. OBVIOUS FRAUD. So the greed mongers would be paid my Medicare. An addition However, If the patient happened to get up and break a hip during the treatment....... and the respiratory therapist was giving another patient a treatment at the time of the fall of the last patient............... who do think will get into trouble? You got it!! The entire weight of the institution will come down on the therapist's head for not monitoring the patient for the entire treatment.Meanwhile they are told, by leadership, not to monitor them and just write that they are monitored so they can get paid. The whole thing is a sham and a fraud. And the Patient's, Nurses, Respiratory Therapists are the one's who pay the price for their greed.Another issue is the patient to nurse/LPN ratio. The way the nursing homes and hospitals staff the units should be considered cirminial. There is NO WAY one person should be responsible for 40 or 50 very sick people. There needs to be a law passed on RN/LPN ratios. These institutions make 6 to 7 million dollars a year. What are they trying to do? Make another million by cutting staff and putting everyone they care for....... and everyone that works for them at risk....... while they, the owners and cushy high paying nurses, get away with murder. Isn't 6 to 7 million a year enough??? You need another million? It's disgusting.Nursin - IS A JOKE

Indeed. I've seen some people voted MOST likely not to give a darn about people (myself included) try nursing and find out that 'hey! they not only give a darn,' they like it and do it well.

Shrug. Don't ever discourage someone. You might be turning away the next best nurse/aid ever.

I"m not discouraging anyone. I have just given you the facts of my experience. You want to work in that environment. Go ahead. It will be very hard for anyone to be the "best nurse" ever..... when those in charge won't allow you because you're one person and they have given you 40 people to take care of. Please tell me how one person is supposed to take care of 40 people? This is the reality of nursing and the nursing field. Be my guest. Become a nurse. It's amuzing to me how everyone is scratching their heads wondering why there is a nursing shortage. What rational person would enter a field were you are overworked and not paid what you are worth in addition to your livelyhood being put at risk on a daily basis so your boss can save some money and buy a new Yacht? If you are a nurse......... you live in a place where only your reality exists........... or you are in totatl denial of the nursing culture and it's demands on us professional who came into this business to help others but are not allowed to. Unless of course we work overtime without getting paid and take the blame for mistakes we did not make so the institution does not get into trouble. Or we are placed in a position of high risk due to understaffing. Or are shamed into doing whatever it is they ask of us because people don't like to be shamed and told they are no good at what they do. These are the tactict the leadship uses to intimidate and get the nurse to go along with the most insane practices. You want to be a nurse. Go ahead and best of luck. Write me in 5 years when you realize how much you are tired of being used, underpaid and abused. Best of luck

I It will be very hard for anyone to be the "best nurse" ever.....

What I meant was that the person could be an extremely good nurse.

Remember, nurses and nursing in general aren't the only industry underpaid and understaffed.

I'd imagine that 5 years of working ANY job in those conditions wears on a person.

In any case, if someone is really interested they can try it. I always recommend becoming a CNA or HHA to see if they like nrusing. Not a humongous time or money investment.

If it doesn't work out, oh well. If it does though...

I'm an extereamly good nurse. My patients call me an angel from God. It's my bosses that don't like me. I refuse to work without being paid for it. For that I have been black balled in my community (making it extreamly difficult for me to find work) and and considered a trouble maker. For expecting to be paid for my work I'm a troublemaker???? Well........ in nursing I am. I did not go to school for 5 years and tally a $50,000 college bill so some stranger can decide for me that I am a volunteer. I'll make that decision on my own. I love nursing. I love my patients. I'm very good at what I do. It's the system and the culture that is crazy.Imagine going to a village in the mountains of Afganistan and trying to tell an 11 year old that it is wrong to blow people up. He would look at you like your nuts and have your head cut off by the tribal leaders for saying such a blasphemous thing.Well, Nursing ( I'm not comparing it to a terrorist group) has the same problem. They don't see the flaws in thier own culture because they have been taught " that's just the way it is"Well, for me, that is NOT just the way it is............ and here in America..... at least we can do something about it. The problem is that nurses cave in and silently complain.......... instead of rallying together for change in this extraordinary fieldNo nursing equals no health care. If nurses really understood that they would know the power they possess and changed could occur.But........... I am alone....... completely alone.......... with no allies. That is how brainwashed the nurses in this culture are. They look at me like I'm crazy for standing up for my rights as a worker while they accept the abuse, neglect, risk to their licenses and being blamed and abused for every thing that goes on in the institution. And think of this. If gas is short......... what happens to the price of gas? It goes up. If sugar is short..............what happens to the price of sugar? It goes up.When nurses are in short supply......... what happens to our salaries? They go down.It is completely insane.

Maybe you need a break? Or a different environment? Or a different form of nursing?

Something... Get some help. Talk to someone. I mean someone close like a friend or family member.

angrynurse......I am so sorry that you feel this way....are you maybe going through a rough period as far as job satisfaction? Maybe in a position out of your usual expertise? Maybe having problems with co-workers?

Think this through and look at your options...as you know there are SO many different areas you may get in to....

ex....psych...supervisory roles....administration....utilization review....infection control.....staffing coordinator....education....dr's offices.....public health....dialysis..... and the list goes on and on....

Good Luck and I hope you find your niche.....

We went through a lot to earn these licenses !!!!:yeah:

I completely understand where you are coming from....The CEO's of the Corps. that own hospitals are interested in one thing $$$$$

The don't have a clue as to how understaffed we nurses are and how that puts the pts. as risk and also our licences......I have seen a nurse try and make a difference...and guess what? she was let go....

So the rest of us are so dependant on our salaries that, yes, we complain in silence.....This is how Corps. have been run forever and still are....there will be no change untill every last nurse goes on strike !!!

100% absolutely, wouldn't be happier doing anything else. IMO anything in the medical field is the most rewarding career choice.
