Do you have a nursing specialty you know you want to pursue?

Just for fun - for all of us hopefuls :)

Do you know specialty you want to work in?

I'm undecided and open to what clicks with me - but I'm thinking maybe NICU, L&D or ER.

How about you?

I really think I'm fit for Orthopaedic Surgery, I love the fast pace and sports medicine has alwasy interested me. However I think I'd do well in an ER as well.

I'd like to reiterate that your speciality choice may change, it is very true! BUT, don't omit that speciality entirely. I went into nursing school thinking all I wanted to do was peds. Dead wrong. I very much dislike sick children. However, I had the chance to rotate in the NICU and I took it, even though I already "knew" I didn't want to work with kids. Low and behold, I LOVED the NICU. Even though it is technically peds, the developmental stage is an entirely different species that gives me what I want and need.

Been working for a year and a half on med surg and telemetry. ER is very appealing to me, although several very experienced nurses have recommended I start with ICU because the ER is not as structured

I think ideally I'd start out as ICU, but as for where I go, who knows? ER doesn't so much appeal to me, but I could do it I think. Palliative/hospice and psych nursing appeal to me, but I know neither one gives me that competitive edge for getting my foot in the door where I want to eventually move to. Honestly it's still very up in the air. I've got a year left to decide, and with so many areas and opportunities, it's hardly a final thing even when I do. We'll see what happens.

When I was in nursing school I really wanted to go to ICU. I hated the ER rotations. I started on a cardiac/tele floor and after a year was over the monotony. The first opening was the ER! And here I am. I love the ER now :) I still think I may like the ICU, but I'm happy where I'm at.

I'm truly all over the place on where I'd like to work. But I figure there's plenty of time and opportunities ahead of me yet and there's no need to stay in one place my whole career!

I think labor&delivery, but I'm open to anything. :) I might advance into nurse-midwife or NP specializing in women's health. But we'll see.

Id love to work in the ER, IR PICU or peds i want to aboid ikd people as much as possible!! i really hate geriatrics and i know its not for me ive worked in a nursing home and now work at a rehab unit with mostly all geriatric pts its hell

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

Wait until you've gone through your rotations to decide if you don't know for certain what you want to do yet!

I've known for years and years I want to be a certified nurse-midwife, to nursing school is basically a step toward that. I LOVED that rotation, which reinforced for me that I'm doing the right thing. I'm doing my preceptorship in postpartum right now (where I have an excellent job lead from the NM), so I'm on the right track! Can't wait to graduate and get PAID to do this stuff!

There were some other rotations that I really liked, too, particularly psych and ED. But L&D/mother baby speak to me the most.

Not sure but leaning toward NICU . I've worked with elderly my whole career so id like to experience a different life stage. Plus the nurses who cared for my preemie baby really touched my heart and gave inspiration.

Specializes in ICU.

My ultimate goal is to get into pediatric oncology. I'm getting my ADN right now and will hopefully end up in the local ER when I graduate. Riley Children's Hospital in Indy requires a BSN so I am going to work up here while I get my BSN online and then hopefully go down there.

Well I really like what I do now in animal medicine which is anesthesia/pain managment and surgical nursing. Anesthesia is a fascinating field but I know in the human field I would need to really work hard to get there!! I probably won't know until I actually start working in a hospital what I want to do and I will most certainly take anything they will give me. I am leaning toward the children's side also NICU, PICU, L&D(in most places around here you need a BA). The nurses that cared for me and my child inspired me that I could do human medicine:)
