I am still young and though i'm not a nurse yet, I still want to have fun. Do nurses get to party and have real fun like everyone else. I know this question seems silly but with so much talk about how nurses don't have time for anything but work this question has been nagging me. What if you want to start a family around the same time you start your career? What about have a newborn child and a husband who wants you home? Is it easier to have children before I get into nursing so that when i'm done they'll be school age and then I don't have to deal with that? I'm sorry for the long post but I was just wondering about this for a while.
this part worries me.You'll certainly still have time and money, and it's up to you whether to spend it building a family or having a good time - and both of these are legitimate choices. However, in my experience, I've been drug tested often enough to rule out having any 'real fun like everyone else'.. and nobody on this board is gonna tell you that working exhausted or with a hangover is any fun... at all.
I don't know about the OP that you quoted so I can't speak for her. But I have fun without illegal drugs, and I only drink when I do NOT work the next day (not that I drink enough to get a hang over in the first place.)
Nobody has fun like a group of nurses! On the rare occasions my coworkers and I get to all go out for dinner we are the noisy table at any restaurant.
We all got together and went out to dinner one night. We were quite the rowdy bunch, had a ball. At one point, my friend noticed the waiters and other staff were just sitting at the bar, watching us. Thought it a bit odd, but we just waved and smiled and kept going. Some time later, noticed the music had stopped as one of the staff walked by holding a mop. I looked around to see that all the tables were empty. Glanced at my watch; the place had closed about 45 minutes before. They were just having fun watching us carry on, I guess
We left a huge tip, btw.

By the way have you ever paid attention to what we, the nurses talk about when we gather around in a restaurent??
Please go into nursing! We need more nurses for the future! Have fun, but be responsible. Have your family when you are mature enough to make wise decisions about child care, etc. I would definatly work a few years before starting a family, I just think it would be easier, be sure your husband also has a realistic view of your life together
Of course, you can have a life outside of nursing! I admit that I have not obtained one yet, after being a nurse for one year, but that is because of poor time management and adjustment issues that are mine alone.
You might develop relationships with some of the nurses you work with, and may develop a comradarie with them, a special bond that no one else but other nurses comprehend. That is a cool thing, too, but be careful, because it is not always wise to poop where you eat.
I have close associations with about 3 nurses on my job, but we don't work in the same department and I had already developed a tight bond with them when I was an assistant. We moan together, laugh and complain together. Wait until school and the boards are over, then party until your shoes drop! Good luck in your courses!!
Some of us second year students took a Friday night off and went to the opera. On our way back, we stopped at a nightclub for a couple drinks and some dancing to the '80's. One of the first year students was there and was glad to us. His comment? 'I thought that all nursing students did was study!' We asked him what his excuse was a dragged him out on the dance floor.

I party plenty, enough for you and I both
. I work nights, so I'm often the last one up at the party...
