According to union contract the full timers get 2 weeks paid vacation every year to begin with and it increases the longer you are there. My friend gets 7 weeks pad every year because she has been there 20 years. She can take it when ever she wants. I am only part time and a new employee. I get vacation pay on each paycheck and I can take two weeks.

I take 4-5 a year. It will depend on where you work and how your staffing is. I take two on the same week every year, spring break and the week after christmas-new years. I take my family snowboarding. The other vacations I work around other nurses schedules. We can afford to have 2-3 off on any given week but some can only afford 1 nurse off(im in the OR, not the unit). We get a staggered amount of vacation time per pay period depending on how many years service.... I get about 30 days a year of Paid time off plus standard holidays, I also get about 10 sick days..... I didnt used to take alot of vacation up until about 6 years ago so I have alot of stocked up days from my first 4 years at this hospital..... I feel I have to take lots of time off to get over the BS that goes on at work.... We all need breaks from it or you will get burnt out. I took off 3 days this week just to get away from the BS while we are a little slow..... Take as much vacation as you can, drive there with the family, it is cheaper since you dont need rentals or airfare..... I will drive almost anywhere in the continental US before I fly 4 of us there...... I can get almost anywhere in a days time. My kids have seen the whole country because of this and they are very close with us and love doing things with us still to this day, oldest is 17 and youngest is 10. My niece also is the same way at 17, she would rather go on our trips than be with anyone else...... Just do it.....

I usually only take 2 weekends a year off so I can go hunting. I've even told my managers, "I've never in my life, by fair means or foul, ever, worked opening weekend or Thanksgiving weekend". They have always been good about giving me my time off (2 weekends outa the whole year? I should think that's the least they could do, and I put in my request off 6 mths in advance ).
Occasionally, I may request PTO for other things, like if a friend comes back from the big sandbox or something, but it's mostly just the 2 weekends a year.
