Do Nurses Get Vacations Every Year

This is a reallllllly location dependant question. Ask the facility you work for/want to work for and see what their answer is. Everyones will be different. Some hospitals give paid time that accumulates and your vacation depends on how many hours you have to turn in for your own vacation.

Most nurses, like any other worker,can take vacation when they want according to company policy. I personally take a week off every summer in June or August.

Absolutely, if they choose to take them. I take several week long vacations per year (4-5, roughly).

I'm a firm believer in taking vacations.

For the last 18 or so years I've taken two vacations a year. Usually I take two weeks at a time. Last November I took the entire month off.

Many units have a policy that only one or two people can go on vacation at a time.

Apparently the unit I just transferred to doesn't allow vacations during the major holidays.

I rarely take a sick day and our personal time is all lumped in together so I get 30 8 hour days off a year for sick and vacation time.

Working 12 hour shifts sometimes you can do some creative scheduling and get a nice stretch off.

At my place of employment if I don't use my vacation time(currently 120 hours) I lose it at the end of the year. We aren't allowed to take vacation between Christmas and New Years and only 1 RN is allowed off at a time. I work in a very small ICU and there's only about 10 regular status staff members so getting vacation time generally isn't a problem. Last year I used my vacation time recovering from surgery.

This year, I'll get my vacation time and personal time on Feb 27th. I'm gonna have to save them for maternity leave. I'm not currently pregnant but hoping to become so in the next few months.

Under my union contract, if I don't use my vacation hours this year, I can "bank" them to be used next year. My unit allows one LPN and two RNs to take the same time off. When it gets nasty, it's granted by seniority. So, I've kissed goodbye to June, July or August and don't even get me started on Christmas week.

Depends.....it can be accrued every pay period....certain amount of hours every pay period.......if it is over a holiday you may not get it especially if it is your holiday to work.

I have worked where we had vacation books....first come, first served. I quickly learned to plan well in advance for things for family that could not be re-scheduled.......

Some give a certain amount of weeks off per year-salaried or non-salaried.

I think the answer to your question will be in your employee handbook or manual. The amount of PTO given varies by company...
