Do you prefer day or night shift and why?

Is it more difficult for a GN to get hired for night shift?

I prefer Noc shift for sure! I feel closer to the people I work with and the residents. I have more time to do more things with the patients. We do not just eat and talk, whoever said that is very misinformed. At least not where I work! It gets VERY busy and stressful some nights, but we all do our best and help eachother. I like the fact that I dont have to pay anyone to baby-sit my son, and that I get to bring him to school, and pick him up. I get to be home and have dinner with my family and do homework with my son and tuck him in at night. I miss snuggling with my Husband during the night, but we make up for it the Nights I am off. If you have school aged children I would definately recommend this shift!!

I work nights - 7 on and 7 off. This way when I am off, my wife and I can do whatever we want, such as travel. Additionally, working all my shifts in a row keeps me from needing to turn myself on and off of day shift hours when the rest of the world works. I work nights basically because "administration" tends to not understand sarcasm. I would much rather keep them out of my hair (what there is left).

could not have said it better myself!~~

i work nights. granted it screws me up some weeks when i am stuck working every other night. but the RNs i work with on nights are awesome and there is no BS to deal with. i actually dread it when i have kids and i have to switch to a more normal day shift job.

omg, days, evenings, but never, EVER nocs.

i can't function.

i'm caught in the twilight zone.

everything is upside down.

i want my old life back.

(can you tell i just started nocs?)

ugh.

i prefer night shift. it just feels as though the staff work together better and that there are less cliques that during the day. also, it seems more laid back at night.

we've had gns hired both day and night...there definitely seems to be enough work to go around.

I like the pace on nights, but not the tendency to overeat (I have gained another 30 lbs since being on nights), the difficulty getting things done during the day, and the sleepiness. It's okay though.

NIGHTS! I hate getting up early in the morning, especially if its dark. Also on nights-no administration- CEO, CFO, and various other titles, policy makers, pts going to xray, surgery etc, the phone doesn't ring off the hook, and fewer visitors. There is room to chart at the nurses station, the charts are where they're supposed to be. Best of all shift diff. Its a pay-cut for me to work days.

In a previous occupation I worked rotating shifts, but mostly night shift. While attending nursing school, I worked night shift. I learned to like night shift primarily because there is so much less to deal with. Just not having the phones constantly ringing with the subsequent actions to be taken regarding the phone call, is enough of an advantage to me. Things are just more quiet and relaxed during the night. At least most of the time. There are times when it gets hectic, but not every shift. I always tell prospective employers that I am a night shift person, but will work the other shifts only if necessary.

It is my understanding, that new nurses many times get stuck with night shift at first because the majority of the staff prefers day shift so that they can be home with their family at night. I'm the opposite. I can still do things during the day if I make time for it and get my work shift done at night. I like it that way. But there are many disadvantages also. It is just a better arrangement for me.

we like night shift because there is not so much personal drama, we do our jobs and have a great night shift team. sleep is hard but you get use to it. so leave the daylight drama to the daylight drama queens

I think night because it might not be as busy and the place would be just a little bit more calm. Also, during the day things get really complicated and the hospital is busy and it's crazy!

nights. i'm a night person so i have more energy and the night crowd is usually younger and there are more childless single people on there..like me! plus they are usually less hectic.
