Hello all,
I am just wondering this. Do they let family members(both are nurse) work in the same floor/department in your hospital? Especially if English is their second language? There is no issue or story to tell. It is just a question I wonder.

Varies from facility to facility.
If I were the boss, I would not allow it....

I always wonder..........Who is they?
Never Mind it was a rhetorical question. It depends on the facility. I have worked with and been the boss of families. I prefer parent/child rather than siblings..... but that also depends on the situation. I have found it successful but you have to choose carefully who is hired and what baggage they bring, It had nothing to do whether english was their second language.

I work with 2 nurses who are mom and daughter. Doesn't affect anything at work, you would never even know if they didn't tell you.
I am sure it works now and then, but generally its bad mojo

Mom and daughter they are. I just know someone in my hospital who wants her mother to work there too, the same department. I was just wondering if that was possible. English as a second language has to do with gossip and possible grouping and eventually drama in the workplace, I think.
I know it depends on the facility. I just wanted to see about you all's place of employment.

Officially, HR says not on the same service. So one in medicine, one in surgery, outpatients or where ever.
But I've seen Managers hire onto the same unit. Until the unions find out and then all hell breaks loose.
The word is Nepotism.
You're right...it takes special people and an involved boss and a stable floor with ground rules set up early. Although there are some facilities that have anti-nepotism policy (non hiring of relatives)
In my hospital, I see many relatives working at the same hospital, but just not the same department. I understand that. But personally, I don't believe in working at the same department with a family member.

I was joking.......people start threads with "Do they let you....." "Can they stop me....." "They are...." and I think....who is they??? . Like I said some very strict ground rules need to be laid out ahead of time like the use of english when on duty unless on break or translating. It's a challenge. I would only consider it IF I knew the one employee for a long peroid of time and knew about family drama (to an extent).
Oh okay. I didn't understand you were joking lol. Hiring manager, HR, hospital policies, I mean. :)

If a manager hires both a mother and a dtr (i.e. it is not the mother hiring the relative) is that considering nepotism? I don't see why it would be wrong for a manager to hire two people from the same family. Would it not be just as bad if an RN on a unit recommends a classmate who is also a good friend and the manager acts on that advice?
